WASHINGTON – The No. RV/21 Georgetown women's soccer team took down Villanova Thursday afternoon at Shaw Field in a 5-0 defeat.Georgetown adds to its three-game win streak and lifts its overall record to 9-0-6 and 5-0-2 in the BIG EAST. Villanova falls to 7-8 overall and 1-6 in the BIG EAST.
Head Coach Dave Nolan
"It was a good performance. Villanova is always a challenging team because they are one of the few teams that are brave enough to try and play us at our own game as they take the game to you, try to possess the ball, and try to create chances. I have to give credit to their coaching staff for following through on their principles and play. The early goal gave us great momentum which is important. Getting the second or third goal kind of killed the game and when we got to halftime it was just a matter of keeping some energy for the second half to not allow them any foothold in the game and we did that. We scored some good goals and were able to get some players on the field. It was tough because of injuries, and other reasons, we had to change our whole system today due to the personnel we are missing, but I give the kids credit as they were ready to adapt to that. It's another BIG EAST win which keeps the pressure on the teams at the top. We go to Marquette and Seton Hall next week and if we can get those two wins then hopefully it can be enough to secure a regular season championship and the right to host the tournament."
About the Win
- Georgetown's first goal came in the second minute of the game. Junior Gia Vicari received the final ball off a series of passes between junior Julia Leas and graduate student Kaitlyn Parcell. Vicari found herself on the end line, megged her defender and slotted the ball high across the goal into the net to get the Hoyas on the board early.
- In the 13th minute, Vicari sailed a ball across the 18-yard box to freshman Cyanne Doyle who laid the ball off at the penalty spot to senior midfielder Devon Lis who was running into the area. Lis mistouched the ball, but quickly shifted her feet and struck the ball blasting it into the top of the net putting Georgetown up 2-0 over Villanova.
- Junior goalkeeper Allie Augur made a single save in the first half off a shot by freshman Francesca Yanchuk after she beat center backs Sydney Cummings and Kelly Ann Livingstone on a breakaway from a bouncing ball down the middle of the field.
- Vicari found freshman Eliza Turner's feet on the outside of the pitch where she was able to play a long ball to Doyle who was inside the six and able to tap the ball in easily past three defenders adding to Georgetown's score (3-0).
- In the second half, Villanova saw more of the possession, but was unable to get looks on goal to even the score.
- In the 72nd minute senior Maya Fernandez-Powell found Vicari out wide. Vicari slotted the ball across the box and Doyle poked it in to put the Hoyas up 4-0.
- Georgetown earned a corner late in the second half and graduate student Daisy Cleverley stepped up to take the kick. Cleverley's ball found Livingstone at the back of the box as she redirected it to sophomore Erin Martin who lofted the ball into the goal.
- Junior Joella Chase saw her first action this year as she saved Villanova's Niki Molina's shot in the 89th minute to help get the Hoyas the shutout.
