WASHINGTON – The No. 15 Georgetown women's soccer team played yet another double overtime game Sunday afternoon ending in a 0-0 draw with Providence. This tie makes the Hoyas 6-0-6 overall and 2-0-2 in the BIG EAST as the Friars move to 6-3-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the BIG EAST. Today's match aired on FS1 and celebrated Breast Cancer Awareness month as well as Georgetown's 11 graduating seniors and graduate students.
Head Coach Dave Nolan
"I thought we were the dominant team in the first half, but we didn't put together enough to knock them out. Then we scored a good goal to go up and at that point I thought it was just a matter of who can get the job done. Kind of out of nowhere they scored off a mistake we made where we turned the ball over and a dangerous player got down the line to send a good cross in to the player on the back post. After that Providence started to feel they could maybe get something and when they started to counter attack they were always a danger.
Tonight's result wasn't a lack of effort, possession, or getting the ball in the right parts of the field. When you're playing against a team that has eight players in the box it requires something special to break them down which is what happened for our goal. We just couldn't find a second opportunity to make the win happen."
About the Win
- Georgetown dominated possession in the first half outshooting and passing Providence.
- The Hoyas had five shots in the first half with nothing challenging Providence's goalkeeper Emma Bodmer.
- In the 61 minute, the Blue & Gray had a breakthrough moment when senior Jenna Royson threw the ball into freshman Cyanne Doyle who found junior Julia Leas in the six. Leas was able to body her defender off and tap the ball past Bodmer to put the Hoyas on the board.
- The Friars did not stop battling as freshman Gillian Kenney scored ten minutes later off a cross from sophomore Meg Huges.
- Graduate Student Sydney Cummings had a stinging header hit the crossbar from a corner played in by graduate student Daisy Cleverley.
- The match held at 1-1 all the way from the 70th to the 110th minute to leave the teams in a draw.
