Second-Seeded Hoyas Advance to BIG EAST Final Downing Butler 2-1

WASHINGTON – The second-seeded Georgetown women's soccer team secured a place in the BIG EAST Conference Women's Soccer Championship game defeating Butler 2-1 in the BIG EAST Semifinal in Cincinnati, Ohio on Thursday evening at Corcoran Field. Fueled by goals from freshman Eliza Turner and graduate student Kaitlyn Parcell, the Hoyas move to 12-1-6 on the season and will appear in their sixth-consecutive BIG EAST Final.

Head Coach Dave Nolan
"Tonight's performance was certainly a marked improvement on our last game, a 1-0 loss to UConn. The girls really didn't need motivating as they know they let their standards drop in that game.
In the first half tonight, I thought we were very good, especially early on. However, Butler is a very talented, well-coached team and we really had to be disciplined as they were pressing us really high. In the second half, that was a little harder to do and I felt we started to get on top. We scored two good goals from a pair of unlikely heroes in Eliza and Kaitlyn. Credit to Butler, they kept fighting and when they scored a wonder strike late in the game it led to a few obviously nervy moments. Thankfully, we were able to manage the final minutes well and now have to get ready to face off against a talented St. Johns team, but it's a challenge the girls are excited for."

About the Win
  • The Hoyas dominated possession for much of the first half as the squad had the Butler (15-4-1) defense on its heels.
  • The best chance of the first half came off of a header on a setpiece. Senior Maya Fernandez-Powell served a corner into the middle of the box and junior Julia Leas' header clanged off of the crossbar.
  • Seconds later, Fernandez-Powell would have a second look that was blocked.
  • Despite chances the teams went into the half in a scoreless tie.
  • Everything changed in the 60th minute when Turner took it herself down the right side. She chipped it in and BU keeper Emma Martin got a hand on it, but couldn't stop it as the ball dropped over the line to break the stalemate and give the Blue & Gray the lead.
  • Six minutes later, the Hoyas added one more when freshman Cyanne Doyle crossed a ball through the box. The BU defender missed on her attempt to disrupt and it went to Parcell who finished past Martin to make it 2-0 in Georgetown's favor.
  • Butler would answer back in the 82nd minute, but the equalizer would never come as GU held on for the 2-1 victory and a chance to make it two in a row on Sunday.
Of Note
  • Georgetown keeper Allie Auger had a quiet day in the net with no saves to her credit but did get the win. Martin took the loss with three saves for the evening.
  • The Hoyas outshot the Bulldogs 14-7 and attempted five corners to Butler's two.
