Menta’s Overtime Goal Lifts Hoyas Past Huskies

WASHINGTON – The No. 16/21 Hoyas conceded its first goal of the season, but answered back with an overtime victory as Georgetown downed the Huskies at Shaw Field. Senior Jenna Menta led the way for the Blue & Gray through  first half and overtime goals, her second and third of the season, respectively. After their win, the Hoyas improve to 7-0, 5-0 in BIG EAST Conference play, while UConn falls to 3-2-1 and 1-2-1 in conference play.

COACH NOLAN ON
  • The outcome of the match: "I'm very happy to come away with another three points. That keeps us sitting on top of the division which was important. For the game itself, it was a tough game, which we knew it was going to be. UConn is a very athletic team, very deep, they press you. To be fair, after the initial 15 minutes where we could have been up three to nothing, and they looked like they were deers in headlights, they responded very well and started to get a foothold on the game."
  • His team's response to the UConn goal: "This was the first time someone has given us a bloody nose all year, and we could have been rattled or we could have just responded well––and I thought we responded very well. At the end of regulation and in overtime, I felt there was only going to be one team that was going to create a goal to score, and it would have been us."
  • His side's stand-out players: "We got a couple of great performances: I thought both of our centerbacks and Jenna Royson were very strong for us. I thought Erin Martin who came in as a freshman for us when we needed a physical presence in the middle of the park, she helped us a lot. But we know we have to get better. This was the first test for us and we responded well with the results but we need to respond a little better next time with the performance."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Georgetown began the game as it wanted, with senior Grace Nguyen floating a ball behind the Huskie backline; Menta latched onto the pass, burst into the UConn penalty area, and dispatched a well-placed finish at the goalkeeper's near post.
  • Graduate student Lauren Gallagher was called into action halfway through the first period as Huskie forward Jada Konte threatened the Hoya net with a low shot to Gallagher's right, but the Blue & Gray keeper held onto the effort.
  • Both defenses stifled any additional attacking opportunities, as Georgetown went into the halftime break with the 1-0 advantage.
  • The Huskies fashioned the first clear-cut chance of the second period as Eveillard Yamilee struck the ball onto Gallagher's left-hand post from just inside the Hoya penalty box.
  • With 15 minutes to play, UConn was awarded a free kick 20 yards from the Georgetown box; Jacqueline Harnett stepped up and floated a cross into the Blue & Gray box which evaded a couple Georgetown defenders and found its way into Gallagher's net to tie the score at 1-1.
  • The Hoyas immediately looked to respond, placing UConn on the back foot through some chance creation of their own.
  • With 11:37 to play, graduate student Daisy Cleverley surged into the Huskie area and looked to tally the game's go-ahead goal, but the Huskie keeper was equal to the effort.
  • Georgetown was unable to find its winning goal in regulation, so both teams were forced to settle the contest in overtime.
  • Just five minutes into the golden-goal period, the UConn netminder struggled to coral the ball due to the slippery conditions, and an opportunistic Menta was in the right place to pounce on the loose ball and slot it home to secure the victory for GU, 2-1.

OF NOTE
  • Menta scored her second and third goals of the season, placing her tally at three for the campaign and boasting eight points on the season.
  • Nguyen's assist was her first of the season and her 12th since joining Georgetown; she is ranked second in career assists among active players (first is Menta with 15).
  • UConn's goal was the first to beat a Georgetown defense that had yet to concede a goal through its opening six games.
  • The Hoyas out-shot the Huskies 15-6, with nine of those shots finding the target.

UP NEXT FOR THE HOYAS
  • Georgetown will continue BIG EAST play on Sunday, March 21 when it heads to New Jersey to play Seton Hall. Kickoff in South Orange is set for 1 p.m. ET as live stats and a stream ($) will be available on GUHoyas.com.
