Eighth-Seeded Georgetown to Face High Point in NCAA Second Round

WASHINGTON – The eighth-seeded Georgetown University men's soccer team will face the High Point University Panthers in the NCAA Tournament Second Round on Sunday afternoon at noon at the Sportsplex at Matthews in Matthews, North Carolina. The nationally No. 2/5 Hoyas are currently 8-1-2 on the season and earned a first-round bye in the tournament as one of the top eight seeds.

How They Got Here
  • Georgetown suffered its first loss of the season falling 2-1 to Seton Hall University in the BIG EAST Championship final.
  • Prior to that, the Hoyas had been on a 27-game unbeaten streak.
  • The Hoyas dominated the BIG EAST awards as junior Giannis Nikopolidis was named the Goalkeeper of the Year for the second-consecutive season.  Rio Hope-Gund was the Defensive Player of the Year, while sophomore Dante Polvara earned Midfielder of the Year honors.  Nikopolidis, Hope-Gund and Polvara joined seniors Derek Dodson and Jacob Montes on the BIG EAST First Team. The Blue & Gray led all schools with five first team honorees. 
  • Additionally, senior captain Sean Zawadzki earned a spot on the second team for the second-consecutive year, and Rothrock along with sophomore Will Sands both were named to the third team.
  • Georgetown has seen three players depart for professional careers as Rio Hope-Gund and Derek Dodson departed the team midseason to sign with Orlando City and Jacob Montes went to Europe for a Premier League tryout.
  • The Blue & Gray has been in the national rankings all year sitting at No. 2 in the country by the United Soccer Coaches Poll and No. 5 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com poll. The team is also No. 2 in the RPI.
NCAA Tournament History
  • The Hoyas are the reigning national champions after winning the title in penalty kicks over Virginia in 2019.
  • Georgetown's NCAA Tournament berth is the ninth under Head Coach Brian Wiese.
  • The Hoyas have been to the tournament on 10 previous occasions with seven trips to the Round of 16 (2019, 2018, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 1997), three to the quarterfinals (2019, 2014, 2012) as well as a pair of College Cup appearances in 2019 and 2012.
  • In 2012, the squad was the national runner up, falling to Indiana 1-0 in the national championship game.
  • The Hoyas are 14-6-5 overall in the NCAA Tournament.
  • This is the eighth time the Hoyas have earned a seeding in the tournament. In 2014, Georgetown was the No. 8 seed advancing to the quarterfinals.
  • Georgetown is 6-2-1 in second round games in the tournament.
About the Panthers
  • This will be the first meeting between the squads.
  • High Point (12-1) won its first Big South Tournament Championship in program history, defeating USC Upstate, 3-1.
  • The Panthers won both the Big South regular season and tournament marking another first.
  • This is the second NCAA Tournament appearance in program history.
  • High Point enters the tournament boasting the number one scoring offense in the country averaging 2.92 goals per game.
