Current and Former Hoyas Represent Georgetown Track & Field at 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials

WASHINGTON – The 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials marked Georgetown's final competition of its postseason schedule. Robert Brandt, Matthew Payamps and Jack Salisbury were the three current Hoyas on display, while alumni Emily Infeld, Josette Norris, Rachel Schneider and Joe White also competed in the Trials' events at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

DIRECTOR OF TRACK & FIELD/CROSS COUNTRY ALTON MCKENZIE ON THE 2020 U.S. OLYMPIC TRIALS:
"Having an opportunity to see three of our current student-athletes compete to make the U.S. Team for the Olympics was awe inspiring and is a testament to the quality of our program and what we're building here on the Hilltop. The legacy of exceptional performances at this highest level continues to be on display as we also saw several Hoya alums competing to make it onto one of the toughest teams in the world to earn a spot on. I was very proud to see our current Hoyas be a part of that special moment, considering all that has taken place in the past year.

I must make special mention of Robert Brandt who has shown nothing but class and dignity representing the Hoyas over the past month, at the Regional Preliminary Round, NCAA's and with the U.S. Olympic Trials, doubling in the 5k & 10k.  It was an honor watching him represent our University and we thank him immensely for putting his best foot forward every single time he toed the line this past season. That Hoya tradition of resilience and perseverance will continue as we look toward the future and more success to come."

HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Capping off an incredible year representing Georgetown, Brandt finished seventh in the men's 5,000-meter run, running 13:32.21.
  • Over the course of the month of June, Brandt raced three 10,000-meter races and three 5,000m races. Every mark that Brandt posted ranks in the top-10 all-time in Georgetown school history.
  • Brandt finished 12th overall in the men's 10,000m, which was held on June 18, the first day of the Olympic Trials.
  • Schneider earned her first Olympic Team berth finishing third in the women's 5,000m running 31:42.92.
  • Schneider represented Team USA at the 2019 IAAF World Outdoor Championships in the 5,000m, where she finished eighth in the semifinal. Schneider earned her first global medal, a silver in the 3,000-meter run at The Match: USA vs. Europe in 2019.
  • After claiming individual First Team All-American honors at the NCAA Championships in the men's 1,500-meter run, junior Jack Salisbury finished sixth in the preliminary rounds at the Olympic Trials. He did not advance to the semifinal.
  • Payamps, who did not advance to the NCAA finals, qualified for the 800-meter run after running 1:47.17, which ranks No. 9 all-Time at Georgetown.
  • White finished sixth in his section of the men's 800m preliminary round.
  • Norris and Infeld both finished eighth in the women's 5,000m and 10,000m events, respectively.

HEAD MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY COACH / ASSISTANT COACH FOR TRACK & FIELD BRANDON BONSEY ON ROBERT BRANDT'S PERFORMANCE:
"Robert capped off an incredible three weeks in Oregon with his seventh-place finish in the 5k yesterday morning. He proved he's not only one of the best distance runners in the NCAA but also one of the best in the country. Between NCAAs and the Trials he had 35k of racing and was still able to perform his very best in his last race. That is a testament to his mental toughness. I believe 100 percent that Robert will be in a position to make the next Olympic team in 2024."

ROBERT BRANDT ON COMPETING AT THE 2020 U.S. OLYMPIC TRIALS:
"Competing at my first Olympic Trials was a very special moment for me. Coming out of the tunnel onto Hayward Field in front of family and friends is something I'll never forget. It was tremendously fulfilling to put all my hard work on display in a stadium full of fans all while wearing the Georgetown uniform. In my short year as a Hoya I have never felt a greater sense of belonging, and I hope I can now leave this incredible program better than I found it as an alum."
