WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's soccer team defeated the LMU Lions at Shaw Field Sunday afternoon after the 90 minute match saw Georgetown take the 2-0 win. It was an aggressive game as the Hoyas were able to maintain the majority of possession to get their first win of the 2021 season.
Graduate student Kelly Ann Livingstone scored on a corner floated in from senior Maya Fernandez-Powell in the fifth minute while freshman Cyanne Doyle had her first career assist to fellow freshman Maja Lardner's goal in the 79th minute which also marked her first career stat.
Head Coach Dave Nolan
- "It was very important for us to get a result today and it's great to have our first win under our belt. We scored an early goal off a set piece to go up 1-0 and that seemed to take the wind out of our sails as we settled into a period of comfortable soccer. They never seemed bothered to come forward and were happy at 0-1. The danger is you think more goals are coming but the longer the game goes on the less your opponent has to lose by chasing it. They never really came out of their shell until the second goal and we probably should have tacked on one or two more. We have a long week now to prepare for a trip to Texas against a talented Longhorn team."
How it Happened
- Georgetown scored in the fifth minute off Fernandez-Powell's floated corner into the back right corner of the box where Livingstone was able to drill the ball in the back of the net with her head.
- Georgetown sat in a low press in their own half for the remainder of the half and were able to pick apart the Lions as they tried to advance down the field.
- LMU had some momentum but were unable to connect in the box for shots on goal.
- The Hoyas came out strong in the second half causing multiple forced turnovers in their attacking third as well as tallying numerous shots in the first 10 minutes.
- The high pressure from the Blue & Gray paid off Doyle made her way down the left sideline to cross it into the six yard box where Lardner was able to place the ball in the bottom right corner of the goal making it 2-0.
- Although aggressive in their pursuit for goals, LMU was unable to match the score and the final remained 2-0.
