Box Score

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's soccer team took down the University of Texas Longhorns in a 2-0 win Sunday evening. The matchup in Austin, Texas saw junior Gia Vicari score first for the Hoyas with senior Maya Fernandez-Powell scoring in the second half to close out the game.

Head Coach Dave Nolan

"Very proud of the girls' performance tonight. We really had to grind out a result. It has been a tough week for us in terms of preparation; we haven't trained in a couple days because of bad weather here in Austin and bad weather at home so we were a little sluggish coming out of the gate. To be fair, Texas put us under a good amount of pressure and we dodged a couple of bullets in the first 20 minutes and then we started to get on top and our goal came just as we started to turn the corner. It was a great play by Julia Leas with a wonderful through ball for Gia to put the ball in the back of the net. Texas was always a danger. Their two freshmen Byars and Missimo were always a threat. I thought Sydney Cummings in particular did a fantastic job of marshalling that space in front of our goal keeper with some very good help from Kelly Ann Livingstone and our fullbacks. We changed our shape at halftime and I said to our midfielders don't be afraid to pull the trigger if you get yourself in shooting range which is what Maya Fernandez-Powell did with her left footed struck ball to put the second goal in. Allie Augur in goal was very good tonight; made a couple of big time saves when we needed them. To come here and get a result against a good, young Texas team on their home turf; we can't ask much more than that."

How it Happened

  • The Hoyas and Longhorns battled for opportunities in the first 20 minutes with possession going back and forth.
  • Goalkeeper Allie Augur came up with back-to-back saves for Georgetown to keep Texas scoreless.
  • Julia Leas slipped a ball through the Texas backline where Gia Vicari was able run onto it and finish in the back of the net. This is Vicari's second goal of the 2021 season.
  • The Longhorns had strings of chances in both halves with shots hitting off both posts and the crossbar.
  • In the 57th minute Maya Fernandez-Powell was able to find space on her left foot and took a shot from outside the 18-yard box which sailed by the Texas goalkeeper to put the score at 2-0.
  • Maja Lardner tallied her first-career assist with the ball she played into Fernandez-Powell for the second goal.

Of Note

  • Augur had six saves in the match to Texas' three.
  • The Hoyas had 15 shots in the game with more than double the number of shots than the Longhorns in the second half.
  • Freshman Cyanne Doyle made her first-career start.
  • Leas tallied her first assist on the season.
  • Georgetown's record is now 2-0-1.
