Hoyas Come Back for 20-14 Overtime Victory at Delaware State

Box Score DOVER, DEL.Joshua Stakely ran in a five-yard touchdown in overtime to give the Georgetown University football team a 20-14 victory over Delaware State on Saturday afternoon in the 2021 season opener. With the win, the Hoyas move to 1-0 on the season, while the Hornets fall to 1-1.
 
KEY STATS
  • Joseph Brunell finished 18-of-32 passing for 197 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Three Hoyas had four receptions each, while Cameron Crayton had a team-high 72 yards receiving. He and ­­­­Sergio Portobanco each caught a touchdown pass.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hoya defense did not allow a first down until Delaware State's third drive of the game.
  • After a scoreless first quarter, the Hornets broke through on an 11-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter.
  • A 14-yard pass resulted in another quick score to give Delaware State a 14-0 lead.
  • With less than a minute to play in the half, Fonteneaux intercepted a pass and returned it to midfield.
  • Brunell found Portobanco in the back corner of the end zone, who wrestled the ball away from his defender for his first career touchdown, making it a 14-7 game with just four seconds on the clock.
  • In the third quarter, Brunell capped a five-play, 66-yard drive with a deep 36-yard touchdown pass to Crayton to tie the game.
  • Georgetown's defense did not allow a first down in the third quarter, and came up with a big turnover midway through the fourth quarter as Quincy Chinwuko stripped the quarterback and Isaiah Byrd recovered the fumble.
  • In overtime, the Hoyas started on defense and only gave up five yards. On Delaware State's field goal attempt, Fonteneaux broke through the middle of the line and made the block to keep the game tied.
  • The Hoyas gave the ball to Stakely four times during their turn with the ball as he found the end zone to give GU the 20-14 victory.
 
 
OF NOTE
  • Saturday was Georgetown's first matchup against a MEAC opponent since defeating Howard University 21-3 in 2011.
  • It was Georgetown's first overtime game since October 20, 2018 when the Hoyas defeated Lehigh 22-16 in double overtime.
