Box Score

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's soccer team battled for a full 90 minutes Sunday afternoon to secure a 1-0 victory over Rutgers. Junior Sofie Fox scored the lone goal of the game from a set piece in the Hoyas favor to keep Georgetown unbeaten with a 3-0-4 record on the season.

Head Coach Dave Nolan

"This was definitely a must win game for us today. After tough games versus West Virginia and Princeton, the team was fired up to play such a strong Rutgers team. Rutgers is a great attacking team and so well coached so we knew we needed to play a perfect game defensively and find a way to nick a goal in. I thought the girls were outstanding today, showing such character and mental strength to go get a win. Rutgers have been averaging 5 goals a game  this year so shutting them out required a huge effort from all involved.

I have to specifically single out Allie Augur in goal today who dealt with everything Rutgers threw at us and also our back three who were outstanding. We have proven we are a difficult team to beat and once we start scoring some goals I think we will take some stopping."

How it Happened

  • The Scarlet Knights had the momentum in the first few minutes of play but the Hoyas quickly tracked down the ball and were able to possess well through the first third of the game.
  • Georgetown was awarded a corner and graduate student Daisy Cleverley took the kick. Cleverley placed the ball in the back of the box where graduate student Kelly Ann Livingstone headed it to the top of the six-yard box and Fox was able to head the ball into the back of the net.
  • Rutgers and Georgetown went into the half with the score 1-0.
  • Throughout the second half, Rutgers had eight shots on goal with sophomores Samantha Kroeger and Sara Brocious and seniors Amirah Ali and Frankie Tagliaferri each recording two shots.
  • The play between the two sides went back and forth but the Hoyas were able to hold off the Scarlet Knights to close the game out at 1-0.

Of Note

  • Goalkeeper Allie Augur made eight saves in the game to give the Hoyas a shutout.
  • Junior Julia Leas led Georgetown with two shots.

  • Rutgers' goalkeeper Meagan McClelland had one save on the afternoon.
