Four Hoyas Selected to Compete in ICSA Fall National Championships

WASHINGTON – Four members of the Georgetown University sailing team have earned bids to compete in the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association's 2022 College Sailing Fall National Championships the organization announced earlier this week. The Open and Women's Singlehanded National Championships will be held in Norfolk, Virginia on November 5-6, 2022. The College Sailing Open Match Race National Championship will be held in San Diego, California on November 12-13, 2022.

Women's Singlehanded Selections
  • Piper Holthus and Alexa Shea both received an at-large bid to the championships after finishing third and fifth, respectively at the MAISA Singlehanded Conference Championship (Faye Bennet).
  • It marked Holthus' second time at this event, and she improved on last year's fourth-place performance.
  • Shea had put together a career day in her first collegiate event, improving in every race, and finishing the event with a string of top-three finishes in a row.
Open Singlehanded Selection
  • Benjamin Smith earned an at-large berth after a seventh-place finish at the 2022 Carl Van Duane MAISA Singlehanded Championship.
  • Smith won the US U21 Championship this past summer in San Diego, California.
Open Match Race Selection
  • Jeffrey Petersen was selected after winning the MAISA Conference Championship.
  • At that event, Petersen was the skipper with crew Joseph Coyne, Eva Fortunato and Scott Mais.
  • In the opening round robin, the Hoyas went 6-1 with a late loss to the home team.
  • In the semifinals the Hoyas drew the No. 3 seed Hobart and William Smith Colleges as their opponent.  Two quick victories in the best-of-three series put the Hoyas in the finals versus Kings Point.
  • The Blue & Gray trailed in the first race, but came back on the final leg to squeeze out a win and go up 1-0.  In the second race, the Hoyas led comfortably throughout and took the win and the championship.
  • This past summer, Petersen and Mais won the U23 World Championship in Pornichet, France defeating Sweden in the final round to take home the title.
About the Selections
  • The National Championship Selection Committees are charged with selecting the most competitive field of at-large candidates for the National Championships.
  • To be eligible, candidates must have competed in a corresponding Conference Championship in any ICSA conference.
  • Criteria for selection at the Open Singlehanded and Women's Singlehanded include performances at ICSA Single and Doublehanded regattas throughout each candidate's ICSA career.
  • This method is the same for the Match Race selection process, where performances in Match Race and Doublehanded ICSA regattas throughout each candidate's career are considered.
Up Next
  • This weekend, the Hoyas will travel to the US Coast Guard Academy to compete for the Coed ACC Finals.
