Hoyas Top No. 19 Lehigh 14-11

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Georgetown University's men's lacrosse team defeated its fourth nationally-ranked opponent of the season with a 14-11 victory on the road at No. 19 Lehigh on Saturday. Alex Trippi and Dylan Watson both eclipsed the 100 career point milestone in the game while freshman Michael Scharfenberger earned the win in his first collegiate start in goal.
 
Hoya Highlights
  • Georgetown improves to 7-1 on the season.
  • Watson led all players with five goals while TJ Haley had two goals with four assists for a game-high six points.
  • Trippi and Declan McDermott both had two goals and an assist, Dylan Hess found the back of the net twice and Colin Munro scored as well.
  • Graham Bundy Jr. dished out three assists and Connor Morin added another.
  • Defensively, the Hoyas were credited with 11 caused turnovers with Alex Mazzone and Gibson Smith IV leading the way with three each.
  • In a battle between two of the top faceoff specialists in the nation, James Reilly went 13 of 29 (.448) from the X to go with seven ground balls.
  • Will Godine had six ground balls, Smith added five and Mazzone had four.
  • In goal, Scharfenberger had nine saves on the day in his first career start. He combined for seven saves in the first and fourth quarters and hauled in two ground balls.
Lehigh Notes
  • Christian Mule' led the Mountain Hawks with four goals while Matt Marker had three.
  • Cole Kirst tallied a goal to go with four assists while Tommy Schelling notched a goal and three assists.
  • Mike Sisselberger won 16 of 29 faceoffs to go with 11 ground balls.
  • Defensively, Teddy Leggett was credited with five caused turnovers and had six ground balls.
  • In goal, James Spence had 11 saves in the loss.
How it Happened
  • A back-and-forth first quarter saw both squads trade goals en route to a 4-4 draw after 15 minutes.
  • The Hoyas opened the second frame with three unanswered goals and closed out the stanza with three in-a-row, sandwiching Lehigh's lone goal in the 6-1 quarter to take a 10-5 halftime lead.
  • Scoring fell silent coming out of the locker room, but Lehigh scored at the 9:01 mark and scored three goals in the final two minutes to pull within one, down 10-9, going into the final frame.
  • Consecutive goals from the Blue & Gray gave Georgetown a 12-9 lead but the Mountain Hawks responded with two of their own to make it 12-11 with just over 10 minutes to play.
  • Watson got his fifth goal of the game with 3:17 to play and gave GU a two-goal cushion. A strong defensive stand capped by a Scharfenberger save on the ensuing possession led to an empty-net goal from Hess to seal the 14-11 victory.
 Of Note
  • Trippi and Watson both reached their milestone scoring with goals in the first quarter.
  • Watson became the 27th Hoya in program history with 100 career points and passed both Bo Stafford and Lucas Wittenberg on the day to sit in 25th place all-time.
  • Trippi has scored 28 points this season – a career best in just eight games – to go with his 74 points he scored as an undergrad at North Carolina.
