WASHINGTON – Georgetown University senior
John Dailey and sophomore
Eli Rabinowitz were both named 2022 Intercollegiate Rowing Coaches Association (IRCA) First Team All-Americans on Tuesday. Additionally, seniors
Kyle Welch and
Ryan Teetsel both earned nods to the second team. This is just the second season the IRCA has awarded All-America honors and the first time the Hoyas have earned the honor.
All four rowers were members of Georgetown's lightweight 8+ crew that earned the Rusty Callow Award after a solid spring season culminating with a third-place finish at the IRA National Championships earlier this month. The Blue & Gray also took third at the Eastern Sprints to close out the season.
Rabinowitz is also a member of the United States U-23 team going to the World Championships in Italy later this month.
"Rowing is truly a team sport and honoring individuals with the All-American reflects on the Georgetown Hoya squad as a whole," said Lightweight Coach Matt Madigan. "These four individuals are representative of the entire squad and recognizes their work ethic, dedication, skills and leadership for the G150s."
In order to be named an "All-American", rowers and coxswains must have met the following criteria: the student-athlete must meet all eligibility rules defined by their institution, the student must have raced in their team's varsity boat for the current spring racing season, the student-athlete must be nominated by their institution and the head coach of the student athlete's institution must be in good standing with the IRCA.
Nominated student-athletes are then selected by the IRCA Board of Directors to "First Team", "Second Team", or "Honorable Mention" based on the following criteria: strength of finish of the institution's varsity boat, nomination Rank within institution and coach's comments, individual achievements and erg score.
There were 102 rowers and coxswains who met the criteria to be named a First Team, Second Team or Honorable Mention All-American, a 40 percent increase over last year's eligible athletes. They represent 30 teams (25 heavyweight and eight lightweight) from the 54-member programs.
The Hoyas are currently competing in the Henley Royal Regatta in the United Kingdom and won their opening heat on Tuesday by two and a half lengths over Edinburgh "B" before falling to top-seeded Oxford "A" on Wednesday.
