Box Score WASHINGTON – The No. 17/13 Hoyas traveled to College Park on Thursday night and worked a 1-1 draw against the Maryland Terrapins. Georgetown moves to 1-2-2 on the season as UMD moves to 0-0-4 for nonconference play.
Head Coach Dave Nolan
"The ending to tonight's game was a real bitter pill for the team and I have a pretty dejected group right now because they know we let this one slip away. At 1-0, we had looked most likely to get a second goal but all night we ran into a red hot goalkeeper and were very unlucky not to finish Maryland off. However, our sport can be cruel sometimes and as Maryland got desperate by just pushing numbers forward and simply knocking balls into the box we fell asleep for the only time in the game and got punished by their late goal. The change in the overtime rule means that with the late goal we had little time to turn it around and no extra time to try to win it.
We know we have to be more disciplined, stay focused and learn from this if we want to achieve some of our goals this season. Now it's onto Columbia University on Sunday where we need to put together a complete game."
About the Match
- Georgetown had 11 shots in the first half with a strike from Maya Fernandez-Powell being the closest opportunity for the squad. The graduate student struck a bouncing ball from outside the box, forcing the Maryland goalkeeper to make a diving save and tipped the ball over the crossbar for a corner.
- Natalie Means put in work for the Hoyas as she went down the right line to sneak in behind the Terrapins back line for several crosses into the box.
- The Terps pressed the GU backline, but senior Julia Leas and graduate student Maya Alcantara were there to move the ball back down the field for the Blue & Gray.
- Georgetown capitalized in the 56th minute when Fernandez-Powell swung a corner in for freshman Henley Tippins and slipped the ball in the net to put GU up 1-0.
- The Terrapins kept their press on through the next 25 minutes and found success from a ball that Mikayla Dayes played to Alina Stahl who evened the score 1-1.
- Despite pushing for the last six minutes, the Hoyas were unable to score and the final remained 1-1.
