Sailing Continues Solid Fall Season at Naval Academy

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University sailing team continued its impressive start to the season with two good performances at the Naval Academy this past weekend.

On the Record - Head Coach Mike Callahan
  • On the performances of Piper Holthus and Alexa Shea at the Conference Women's Singlehanded Championship
"I was really pleased with both of their performances.  Piper is a great sailor and showed it with a good consistent regatta, avoiding any big errors and proving once again that she is one of the best sailors in college.  Alexa was equally impressive. She got better throughout the regatta and her string of races at the end was great to see.  I'm really happy for her and hopefully this boosts her confidence for the rest of the semester."
  • On the coed team at the Chesapeake Invitational
"The group we sailed on Saturday was dominant, fast and started well. I was impressed with everyone, especially Grace, Caro and Spencer who really made a big difference. Sunday just wasn't our day. We struggled to get off the starting line and didn't quite execute the game plan we wanted so we lost a 30-point lead to Navy. It's a long season and we have a lot of time to improve."
Faye Bennet - Conference Women's Singlehanded Championship (3rd, 5th of 17)
  • Two members of the women's team, Piper Holthus and Alexa Shea, competed at the Conference Women's Singlehanded Championships against the top women's sailors in the conference in Laser Radial sailboats.
  • Over the course of two days and 14 races, Holthus ended up in third and Shea finished fifth.
  • It marked Holthus' second time at this event, and she improved on last year's fourth-place performance.
  • The third-place finish puts her in contention for an at-large selection to the ICSA Women's Singlehanded National Championships at Old Dominion on November 5-6.
  • Shea put together a career day in her first collegiate event, improving in every race, and finishing the event with a string of top-three finishes in a row.
  • The strong finish moved Shea from eighth overall to fifth giving her a better shot at an at-large berth.
Chesapeake Invitational (2nd of 6)
  • The coed team also competed at Navy this past weekend at the Chesapeake Invitational against six local teams. The team managed success on Saturday but faltered in its efforts on Sunday.
  • On Saturday, a younger squad went out and dominated the regatta as junior Mariner Fagan and sophomore Spencer Kriegstein led the regatta overall and in A division.
  • Sophomores Mateo DiBlasi and Caro Gaston were third overall and first in C division, while sophomore Diego Escobar and senior Grace Flanagan were seventh overall.
  • On Sunday, the Hoyas brought in three new boats that did not fare quite as well.
  • Senior skippers Scott Mais, Wills Cook, Joe Coyne and crews senior Rebekah Morrison as well as  juniors Addi Harris and Audrey Fung stumbled a bit and that took the Hoyas from first overall to second place behind host Navy.
Up Next
  • Next weekend, the Hoyas will travel to the US Merchant Marine Academy for the MAISA Match Race Championship.
  • The coed and women's teams will be competing at the Oyster Bowl at St. Mary's College of Maryland.
