Georgetown Athletics Announces 2021-22 Awards

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University Department of Athletics announced the recipients of its four major department awards for the 2021-22 academic year on Friday.  Three teams were honored as GU released its awards for Outstanding Achievement by a Female Athlete, Outstanding Achievement by a Male Athlete, Outstanding Coaching Achievement as well as the Robert A. Duffey Scholar-Athlete Award. The first of the awards will be presented this weekend at the men's soccer game at Shaw Field.

Robert A. Duffey Scholar-Athlete Award
The Robert A. Duffey Scholar-Athlete Award is presented each year to the Georgetown senior who best exhibits excellence in both academics and athletics.
Drew Carbone (B'21, G'22) - Men's Swimming & Diving
  • Carbone captured four BIG EAST Most Outstanding Male Swimmer awards in his career while helping the Hoyas to their first conference title in program history.
  • The Chelmsford, Massachusetts native picked up 25 All-BIG EAST selections on the Hilltop, earning four nods in the 100-yard back, 200-yard back and 200-yard IM, respectively.
  • As an individual, Carbone picked up 11 gold medals across his four years at Georgetown, including four in the 200-yard backstroke alone.
  • On top of his seven Georgetown records, Carbone also holds the BIG EAST record in the 200-yard back with a time of 1:42.11.
  • Swam in the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2021.
  • Helped the Hoyas to 10-consecutive semesters as top 10 Scholar All-America honorees by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA).
  • A five-time BIG EAST All-Academic selection and assisted Georgetown in five BIG EAST Academic Team Excellence awards.
  • Carbone shined in the classroom as well, finishing his studies with a 3.874 GPA in the McDonough School of Business while earning a bachelor's degree in finance and a master's in business analytics.
Outstanding Achievement by a Female Athlete
Maggie Donahue (C'23) – Women's Track & Field / Cross Country
  • Donahue was the BIG EAST's Female Scholar Athlete for 2021-22. She won the award for her accolades during the 2021 cross country campaign where she competed in just her second cross country season and was named an All-American each year.
  • The 2021 BIG EAST Champion led the Hoyas in all but one race in 2021 and on the sport's biggest stage, she finished 30th overall, clocking 19:51.3 over the 6,000-meter race. The Hoyas finished 18th overall.
  • In total, Donahue moved up 47 spots and split 3:12.9 over the final 1,000 meters to secure her All-America status.
  • The Wellesley, Massachusetts native was the lone BIG EAST All-American on the women's side and was one of two women from the Mid-Atlantic region to earn the recognition.
  • In addition to her cross country accolades, Donahue had an impressive spring earning All-America status in track & field.
  • The junior added to her BIG EAST Championship win in the 5,000-meter run with a 13th-place finish at NCAAs to earn second team All-America accolades.
  • Donahue also competed in the 10,000-meter run in Eugene.
  • She is currently competing in cross country for the Hoyas this season.
Outstanding Achievement by a Male Athlete
Dante Polvara – Men's Soccer
  • Was nominated for a 2022 ESPY in the Best College Athlete, Men's Sports category and also named a BIG EAST Sport Excellence Award winner as well as the BIG EAST's Male Scholar Athlete for 2021-22.
  • Signed a professional contract with Aberdeen F.C. of the Scottish Premiership making five appearances for the Dons since arriving in January.
  • Became the first winner of the MAC Hermann Trophy, college soccer's top honor, in Georgetown program history.
  • It was his second season being named a MAC Hermann semifinalist after earning the distinction a year prior.
  • Polvara was the 2021 BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year as well as a First Team All-BIG EAST selection.
  • He also earned United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-America honors and First Team All-East Region honors.
  • The midfielder started all 22 games for the Blue & Gray and led the team in scoring with seven goals and six assists for 20 points. Three of his goals were game winners that year.
  • The team captain was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week twice this past year as well as earning a nod to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
  • The finance major was a United Soccer Coaches First Team Scholar All-American as well as being named First Team Scholar All-South Region by the organization.
  • In his career on the Hilltop, Polvara appeared in 60 games with 43 starts and scored 19 goals to go along with nine assists for 47 points. He also tallied five game winners.
  • Polvara was a two-time United Soccer Coaches All-American, a two-time United Soccer Coaches All-East Region selection, a two-time BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year and a two-time First Team All-BIG EAST honoree.
  • In his time on the Hilltop, the Hoyas advanced to three-consecutive NCAA quarterfinals, two College Cups and won the 2019 NCAA Championship. Additionally, the squad won two regular season BIG EAST titles as well as a pair of BIG EAST Championships.
Outstanding Coaching Achievement
Swimming & Diving Coaching Staff – Jack Leavitt, Megan Zarriello
  • Leavitt guided Georgetown to the program's first BIG EAST title in history after the men's team erased a 9.5-point lead on the final day of the championship meet.
  • The men's squad knocked off two-time defending champion Xavier by a score of 794-784.5, thanks in part to 13 All-BIG EAST selections in 2022.
  • Leavitt and company also captured BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Coaching Staff of the Year after the team's historic victory.
