WASHINGTON – Georgetown's Rich Chvotkin, Voice of the Hoyas in his 49th season, has been voted by the National Sports Media Association as the winner of the 2023 Woody Durham Voice of College Sports Award. Sponsored by Learfield and the University of North Carolina athletics department, the award will be presented during the 63rd NSMA awards banquet in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on June 26, 2023.
RICH CHVOTKIN: 2023 WOODY DURHAM VOICE OF COLLEGE SPORTS AWARD RECIPIENT
- Rich Chvotkin, voice of the Hoyas since 1974, called his 1,500th game on February 6, 2022 against the Providence Friars.
- Beginning his tenure with the Hoyas on November 30, 1974, his career has included 40 years of postseason broadcasts and his NCAA Tournament coverage spans six decades.
- Among active Division I MBB radio announcers, Chvotkin's 49 seasons of experience puts him with the likes of Duquesne's Ray Goss (55 seasons), Pittsburgh's Bill Hillgrove (54), West Virginia's Jay Jacobs (52), Indiana's Don Fischer (50) and Wyoming's Kevin McKinney (50).
- He has broadcast more than 200 games at the World's Most Famous Arena and called the entire BIG EAST Tournament from 1982 through the 1997 Tournament.
- Chvotkin was inducted into the Washington Metropolitan Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012.
- He was the recipient of the 2022 BIG EAST Media Award.
ABOUT THE WOODY DURHAM VOICE OF COLLEGE SPORTS AWARD
- A select group of NSMA member play-by-play announcers, including past winners, as well as representatives of the two sponsoring organizations vote on the award.
- Created in 2018, the Woody Durham Voice of College Sports Award recognizes professional college broadcasters who fit the following criteria: preparation; association with his/her school; tenure at their school; efforts in the community; mentorship of young broadcasters; character. The award is named for the legendary, 40-year radio play-by-play announcer for the University of North Carolina, and is sponsored by Learfield and the University of North Carolina athletics department.
