;Sailing Competes in Two Regattas

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University sailing team competed in two events this past weekend. At the MAISA Open Singlehanded Championship three Hoyas competed for a chance to make the ICSA Singlehanded National Championship. The Hoya women's team competed in its first national event of the year at round one of the Atlantic Coast Championship Series.

MAISA Open Singlehanded Championship
3rd, 4th, 15th of 18
  • The MAISA Open Singlehanded Championship was held at the US Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York as three Hoyas competed for a chance to make the ICSA Singlehanded National Championship on November 11-12 at Tulane.
  • Torrential rains blanketed New York for the days ahead of the regatta, and on Saturday morning the Hoyas were greeted with more rain and light NE winds.
  • Ten total races were sailed on Saturday, and the relatively light and fluky winds made consistency hard to come by.
  • Sophomore Benjamin Smith and freshman Peter Barnard both ended the day in the top five overall.
  • Sophomore Leighton Farrel was knocking on the top 10 but was just outside of that group.
  • On Sunday, four races were sailed in even lighter conditions.
  • Barnard. had a good day and rose up to fourth overall, while Smith had a few tough races that knocked him down to third. Farrel ended up in 15th.
  • Both Barnard and Smith will now wait to see if they earn an at-large berth into the National Championship.
Atlantic Coast Championship Series - Round 1
7th of 17
  • The Hoya women's team competed in its first national event of the year at Round One of the Atlantic Coast Championship Series.
  • The series features the top 36 women's teams from across the country evenly seeded into two events. The top nine from each move to the Atlantic Coast Championship, while the bottom nine move to the Atlantic Coast Tournament.
  • The Hoyas' bracket featured the last two national champions in both Stanford and Boston College as well as some other talented squads.
  • Over the course of the weekend, the Hoyas sailed 34 races and finished seventh overall, earning them a berth at the Atlantic Coast Championship in two weekends at Yale.
  • The Hoyas were led by the A Division boat of skipper Piper Holthus with crews Audrey Fung and Morgan Rice who finished fifth.
  • In B, sophomore Kelly Bates with crews Margot Gordon and Caro Gaston rallied on the final day to finish in ninth.
  • Conditions were windy and shifty all weekend, and the Hoyas squad had to battle back from some tough starting positions, but came away with the solid seventh-place finish.
Up Next
  • This upcoming weekend, the Hoyas will be competing at the Open ACC Round 1 at Harvard as well as the Oyster Bowl Open and Women's Regattas at St. Mary's.
