Georgetown Hosts Mount St. Mary’s and American as Part of Georgetown MTE

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team will play two games in as many days this weekend with matchups against Mount St. Mary's on Saturday (noon) and American on Sunday (4:30 p.m.), with both games played at Capital One Arena. The Hoyas are coming off a 71-60 setback at Rutgers on Wednesday evening as part of the Gavitt Tipoff Games and enter the contest with a 1-2 record while Mount St. Mary's is 1-1 on the season and American holds a 2-2 record.

  • Sunday's game can be seen live on FS2 with Eric Collins calling the play-by-play and Terrence Oglesby providing analysis.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • The Hoyas enter the weekend at 1-2 on the season following a 71-60 setback at Rutgers as part of the Gavitt Tipoff Games.
  • For the second-consecutive game, Jayden Epps led a pair of Hoyas in double-figure scoring as he tallied 16 points on four made field goals and a 6-for-7 effort from the free-throw line.
  • Dontrez Styles tallied 15 points on a 4-for-7 performance from the field, including a 3-for-5 effort from beyond the arc, and chipped in another four from the charity stripe. Styles led the Hoyas on the glass with seven rebounds while Ryan Mutombo and Supreme Cook each chipped in six apiece.
  • The Hoyas shot 35.3% (18-51) for the game while owning the battle on the glass, outrebounding Rutgers 40-29.
  • Epps leads a quintet of Hoyas in double-figure scoring, averaging 14.3 points per game while dishing out 5.0 assists per game. He is followed by Rowan Brumbaugh (12.7 ppg), Styles (12.3 ppg), Cook (11.0 ppg) and Jay Heath (10.7 ppg).
  • Cook is Georgetown's leader on the boards, nearly averaging a double-double with 9.7 rebounds per game. His 9.7 rebounds per game ranks second in the BIG EAST Conference early in the season while Epps' 5.0 assists per game is tied for second in the league.
  • The Hoyas are led by Ed Cooley who is in his 18th season as a collegiate head coach and his first season with Georgetown. In 2022, Cooley was the recipient of the Naismith Coach of the Year Award, named the Sporting News Coach of the Year, the BIG EAST Coach of the Year, the NABC District 5 Coach of the Year and the USBWA District 1 Coach of the Year.
 
ABOUT THE MOUNTAINEERS
  • Mount St. Mary's enters the game at 1-1 following a loss at Maryland (68-53) and a win against Coppin State (74-60).
  • It was a balanced effort against Coppin State as four players scored in double figures, with all 10 players who appeared in the game scoring. Dakota Leffew led with 14 points, with Joshua Reaves (12), George Tinsley (11) and Xavier Lipscomb (10) also reaching double figures. The Mount led by as many as 21 points in the second half, and held Coppin State to 33.9 percent shooting in the game.
  • Reaves and Leffew are the two Mountaineers in double-figure scoring, each averaging 11.0 points per game.
  • Tinsley leads the Mount on the boards, grabbing 7.5 rebounds while Ronald Jessamy adds 6.0 rebounds per game.
  • Lipscomb's 4.0 assists per game paces the offense.
  • Dan Engelstad is in his sixth season as the head coach of the Mountaineers. He owns a 60-91 record at Mount St. Mary's and is 164-125 in 10 seasons as a head coach, including the first five at Southern Vermont.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES WITH THE MOUNT
  • Georgetown leads the series 24-5 and Saturday will be the 30th meeting all-time between the two programs.
  • The Hoyas have won the last six meetings with the last win for MSM occurring during the 1960-61 season, a 93-79 loss on the road.
  • The last meeting was an 81-68 win in the season opener of the 2019-20 season. A trio of Hoyas scored in double figures with Omer Yurtseven recording a double-double with 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting and 12 rebounds in 29 minutes of action.

  • American enters Sunday's game with a 2-2 record. The Eagles opened the season with road losses at Villanova (90-63) and at William & Mary (75-56) before finding a rhythm in their home opener against Siena, a 78-58 win, and a decisive 87-73 win at home against NJIT on Thursday.
  • Behind 28 points and 11 rebounds from senior Matt Rogers, the American University men's basketball team handily defeated NJIT at Bender Arena on Thursday. He led a quintet of Eagles in double figures in the win.
  • Rogers leads a trio of Eagles in double figures as he averages 15.3 points per game, followed by Geoff Sprouse and Jermaine Ballisager Webb, both averaging 10.0 points per game.
  • Lincoln Ball leads AU on the glass, pulling down 6.0 rebounds per game while Elijah Stephens' 6.0 assists per game paces the offense.
  • Duane Simpkins is in his first season as the head coach at American. Simpkins got to American after eight seasons on the staff at George Mason. During his time in Fairfax, Simpkins helped guide the Patriots to program bests within the Atlantic 10. Mason set or matched A-10 bests in league wins and tournament seeds in four seasons during his tenure. The Patriots matched a program best with 11 Atlantic 10 victories in 2022-23, and finished at 20-13 overall.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES WITH AMERICAN
  • Georgetown leads the series against American 47-9 but lost the meeting a season ago when the Eagles were able to get the 74-70 win at Capital One Arena.
  • The Hoyas had won the previous 11-straight meetings.
  • In last year's meeting, three Hoyas tallied double figures including Heath on 4-of-9 shooting while chipping in three steals and two assists.
