Fourth-Seeded Hoyas Host JMU in NCAA Second Round

WASHINGTON – The fourth-seeded Georgetown University men's soccer team will face James Madison University in the NCAA Second Round on Sunday at Shaw Field. Kickoff is slated for 12:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ with Georgetown men's soccer alums Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser back in the booth for their 19th season.

About the Hoyas
  • No. 4/7 Georgetown is the fourth seed in the NCAA tournament, the program's 12th appearance in the tournament under Head Coach Brian Wiese.
  • The Hoyas last faced Xavier in the BIG EAST Championship on Sunday, drawing 0-0 through 110 minutes of action and ultimately losing the title to Xavier in penalty kicks 5-4.
  • Ryan Schewe took the draw and shutout in the net for the Hoyas, making five saves in the match for his fifth shutout of the season. In penalty kicks, Schewe managed one save to keep the Hoyas in the match.
  • Three Hoyas earned spots on the BIG EAST All-Tournament squad including Marlon Tabora, Kieran Sargeant and Kenny Nielsen. Nielsen was also awarded BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, while Tabora was named BIG EAST Co-Midfielder of the Year and Schewe was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year.
  • In total, seven Hoyas earned BIG EAST postseason awards, with Nielsen, Schewe, Tabora, Jacob Murrell and Sargeant being named to the first team. Kyle Linhares and Zach Zengue were named to the Third Team All-BIG EAST.
  • Murrell leads the Hoyas with 11 goals and four assists for 26 points on the season. He sits at second nationally in game-winning goals (6) and 22nd for total goals.
  • Tabora and Zengue trail Murrell with 16 points apiece on the season, Tabora with four goals and eight assists, and Zengue with five goals and six assists.
  • Tabora sits at 26th nationally in total assists and 31st nationally in assists per game (0.47).
  • In goal, Schewe has played a majority of the minutes with 28 saves and a 0.83 goals-against average for the year which puts him at 30th nationally.
About the Dukes
  • JMU is 9-4-5 on the season, and was 4-2-3 in Sun Belt conference play. 
  • The Dukes are coming off a 3-2 win over Pitt in the NCAA First Round on Thursday night. Alex Krakowiak tallied one goal and Rodrigo Robles tacked on the other two to give the Dukes the victory.
  • Robles leads the Dukes with nine goals and six assists on the season for 24 points. Evan Southern trails him with six goals and five assists for 17 points.
  • Despite falling in the Sun Belt quarterfinals to Kentucky, four Dukes earned All-Sun Belt awards with redshirt senior Clay Obara and freshman Luca Nikolai were named to the first team while redshirt senior Robles and sophomore Kevin Larsson were tabbed to the second team.
  • Sebastian Conlon has started all 18 games for JMU, recording 47 saves and two shutouts for a goals-against average of 1.31.
  • With the at-large bid, this is the Dukes' 16th appearance in the NCAA tournament in program history, and first since 2021.

  • The Hoyas are 3-1 all-time against the Dukes and 2-0 at home.
  • Georgetown faced JMU during the regular season on September 19 at Shaw Field, in which the Blue & Gray took the victory 2-0. Murrell and Joe Buck each notched a goal for the Hoyas in the contest.
Tournament Notes
  • Last season, the Hoyas advanced to the second round of action following a 2-0 victory over Navy at Shaw Field. In the second round, GU fell 1-0 in overtime at the University of Tulsa.
  • Georgetown's NCAA Tournament berth is the 12th under Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • The Hoyas have been to the tournament on 14 occasions in program history with nine trips to the Round of 16 (2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 1997) and five to the quarterfinals (2021, 2020, 2019, 2014, 2012).
  • The Hoyas won the national championship in 2019, downing Virginia in penalty kicks.
  • GU's last trip to the College Cup was in 2021 when the squad fell to the University of Washington 2-1 in the national semifinal.
  • In 2012, the squad was the national runner up, falling to Indiana 1-0 in the national championship game.
  • The Hoyas are 19-9-6 overall in the NCAA Tournament.
  • This is the 10th time the Hoyas have earned a seeding in the tournament. It is the first No. 4 seed that Georgetown has earned.
