WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics inducted seven Hoya luminaries into the Hall of Fame on Friday evening. Additionally, the Department celebrated the life and career of former men's basketball academic advisor Mary Fenlon. The celebration was held on campus at the Lohrfink Auditorium with a reception to honor the outstanding achievements of these former student-athletes and staff.
Ryan T. Costello (C'01)
Sailing
- Two-time All-American skipper
- Finalist for the 2001 College Sailor of the Year award
- Named a captain during his junior and senior years
- Team won the 2001 ICSA Team Racing Championship, the first national title in the program's history
- Coached at Georgetown for three years following graduation.
Brian G. Bissell (B'02)
Sailing
- Two-time All-America skipper honoree
- Named team MVP as a senior
- Team received its first-ever No. 1 national ranking in the spring of his junior year
- Won the team racing national championship in 2001 and placed third in 2002
- Went on to sail professionally in multiple national competitions in the six years following graduation
John M. Willey (B'00)
Swimming & Diving
- Named a captain his senior year and earned team MVP honors during his final two years
- Broke multiple school records during his college career, setting new individual marks in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events and relay records at the 200, 400, and 800 distances
- Earned a medal in the 2000 BIG EAST Championships in the 200-yard freestyle
Meghan Welch Betts (F'00)
Swimming & Diving
- Earned MVP honors all four years
- Finished her junior year undefeated in dual meet competition
- Broke the school record in the 200-yard individual medley during her first race as a Hoya
- Additionally, she broke school records in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke, the 800 free relay and the 200 and 400 medley relays
- She was a member of the Navy ROTC program, and commissioned in the United States Navy before graduating
Gharun Hester (B'01)
Football
- Three-time All-American honoree
- Named the 1999 Football Gazette Receiver of the Year
- Captained and won the Al Blozis Award as the team's most valuable player during his senior year
- Georgetown's all-time leader in six record categories, including single game touchdown receptions and receiving yardage, season touchdown receptions, average yards per catch and career touchdown receptions and receiving yardage
- Joined the Georgetown men's basketball team during his sophomore year under Head Coach John Thompson Jr.
- Served as an assistant coach for Georgetown football from 2001-06
Caitlin McLean (C'01)
Lacrosse
- Named the 2001 National Defender of the Year in Division I
- A two-time first-team All-America selection
- Nominee for the prestigious Tewaaraton Trophy during her senior year
- Team appeared in four-consecutive NCAA tournaments, making it to the semifinals and championship game during her senior year, a first in the program's history
- The Hoyas notched 49 victories during her career, setting a new school mark for most wins in a four-year period
- Was also a four-year starter on the Georgetown field hockey team, captaining her final season.
Bowen DeN. Holden (C'01)
Women's Lacrosse
- Finalist for the NCAA Honda Award and a nominee for the inaugural Tewaaraton Trophy
- Named the 2001 NCAA Division I Goalkeeper of the Year
- Team captain and two-time MVP during her last two seasons
- Selected to the Intercollegiate Lacrosse Coaches All-Academic Team
- Tore her ACL as a senior, but played through it for the remainder of the season, leading her team to a 17-3 mark with the most victories and highest winning percentage in school history
- Helped her team to two-consecutive NCAA quarterfinal appearances.
- Served as an assistant coach at Georgetown for four years following graduation
Mary Fenlon
Coaches & Officials
- Assistant coach at Georgetown alongside Head Coach John Thompson after collaborating with him on several other teams and projects, namely the Neighborhood Youth Corps and St. Anthony's High School
- Served as academic coordinator and assistant to the athletic director for basketball during Coach Thompson's tenure
- First woman to serve on the coaching staff for USA Basketball, under Coach Thompson during the 1988 Olympics
- Spent 27 years with the program, winning the 1984 NCAA Championship, appearing in three Final Fours, and making 25 postseason appearances, including 20 in the NCAA Tournament and capturing six BIG EAST Tournament titles.
- During her time on the Hilltop, 97 percent of the players who remained at the school for four years graduated. In turn, the team's academic excellence award was named in her honor
