Hoyas Put in Work at Day 1 of UNCW Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WASHINGTON – The Georgetown softball team played its first two games of the UNC Wilmington Tournament today in North Carolina. The Hoyas lost to Appalachian State 3-0 in a close battle that saw the two sides go scoreless through the first five and a half innings. Georgetown fell 9-3 to Eastern Kentucky later in the evening in a back-and-forth matchup.

How It Happened

Vs. the Mountaineers
  • Morgan Zamora earned the first hit of the game with a single to left center field backed up with a double by Cameron Kondo to put runners on second and third base, but the Hoyas closed out the inning with the two still on base.
  • App State landed a runner on first in the bottom of the first from a walk which GU matched with Lorena Vasquez-Inzunza being walked in the top of the second inning.
  • Georgetown's pitcher Brooke Plonka went through batters 1-2-3 in the second with a pop up and two fly balls for three outs.
  • In the top of the third, Kacy Lyman singled to third, but GU batters fouled, flied, and grounded out to move to the bottom of the inning.
  • Plonka only allowed a walk in the third and the Hoyas and Mountaineers both saw quick three-out at bats in the fourth inning.
  • Lyman tabbed her second single of the game in the fifth inning out to center field followed by Mae Forshey adding a double to center field in the top of the sixth.
  • App State singled to shortstop in the bottom of the sixth with a double advancing runners to second and third base. Plonka walked a runner to load the bases and a Mountaineer followed through with a triple for three RBIs and the first runs of the game (3-0).
  • Georgetown started off the seventh inning with two ground outs and a foul out which closed out the game 3-0.

Vs. the Colonels
  • Eastern Kentucky started things off in the bottom of the first inning with a double to left field to bring a runner across home to make it 1-0 to the Colonels.
  • The Colonels added a home run for two RBIs to end the first with EKU leading 3-0.
  • Georgetown's Brittany Lew advanced to third base in the bottom of the third inning as Lyman scored on a EKU wild pitch (3-1).
  • The Colonels singled up the middle to advance runners to second, third and home to bump the score to 4-1.
  • Kondo added a single in the fourth inning and Naya Campos reached first base on a fielder's choice to advance Kondo to second.
  • Zamora slipped a single up the middle later in the inning allowing Kondo and Campos to score, closing the deficit to just 4-3.
  • Eastern Kentucky tabbed a hit in the fifth inning, but both GU and EKU closed out the innings with no runs.
  • In the sixth inning, the Colonels added four runs from a double to left center field and a 2 RBI homer to left center field (8-3).
