Georgetown Takes Second at Szambecki Team Race

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown sailing team placed second at the Aaron Szambecki Team Race this past weekend in Norfolk, Virginia. On the women's side, GU finished sixth at the Jen Harris Team Race in Annapolis, Maryland.

Saturday saw winds ranging from 10-28 knots from the SSE to SW and remained shifty throughout the day. Conditions allowed for a total of 68 races and the entire event was completed on Saturday.
Georgetown was a perfect 9-0 in the round robin stage with victories over Charleston (1-3-6), South Florida (1-2-3), George Washington (1-2-5), Fordham (1-3-5), St. Mary's (1-2-3), Roger Williams (1-2-6), Tufts (1-2-3), Tulane (1-2-5) and Old Dominion (1-2-3).
In the top six, Georgetown was 2-3 with wins over Tulane (1-3-5) and Fordham (1-2-5), but the Blue & Gray fell to St. Mary's in the sail off by a score of 3-4-6.

Competitors arrived to a nice 10 knot easterly breeze at the 2023 Jen Harris Team Race but as soon as the fleet launched, the rain started and the wind died. Only nine races were completed with light winds. On Sunday, winds were from the NW and racing began on time. Races continued without delay through the first round robin, but there was not sufficient time to do a second round resulting in a final four.
Georgetown went 2-5 overall with victories over George Washington (1-2-6) and Navy (1-2-6).

Georgetown will welcome families to the Potomac this weekend as the Hoyas celebrate the current student-athletes with the GUST Family Weekend. Festivities and sailing are planned for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
