WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team will travel to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to open BIG EAST play against the Villanova Wildcats this weekend. The Hoyas and the Wildcats will face off in a three-game series with game one slated for Friday, March 31 at 3 p.m.
GAMEDAY INFORMATION
ABOUT THE HOYAS
- The Hoyas are currently 14-11 after dropping two contests this week to Maryland and Mount St. Mary's.
- Last weekend the Hoyas swept the Dayton Flyers in what turned out to be a record setting weekend for the Blue & Gray. GU recorded 49 strikeouts in the three-game series which is believed to be a conference record for most strikeouts in a series against the same team where each game only went nine frames.
- Ubaldo Lopez and Andrew Williams played crucial roles in last weekend's series earning them BIG EAST Player of the Week and BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week, respectively.
- Lopez has been hot for the Hoyas in the last five games hitting a home run in each contest. Yesterday, Lopez's three-run shot moved him into fourth all time in career home runs with 28 passing Andrew Cleary ('05) who was at 27.
- Last Saturday, GU set a program record for strikeouts in a game with 19. Twelve of those came from Williams in 5.2 innings of work. The previous record was 18 and it was set in 2019 against Villanova.
- Last season, GU took the series against Villanova 2-1 winning games one and two by a score of 9-6 and 3-2, respectively.
ABOUT VILLANOVA
- The Wildcats come into the weekend with a 4-19 record after picking up a midweek win over Lehigh 9-7 in the Liberty Bell Classic.
- Cameron Hassert leads Villanova at the plate with a .292 average. Hassert also leads the team in home runs with six and RBIs with 17.
- On the mound, Sal Fusco, Devin Rivera and Chic DeGaetano lead the Wildcats with the most innings pitched. Fusco is 0-4 and has a 7.30 ERA in 24.2 innings of work. Rivera is 0-4 and has an ERA of 7.67 in 29.1 innings. DeGaetano rounds out the trio with a 1-3 record and a 7.88 ERA in 24 innings this season.
- The Nova pitching staff has recorded 183 strikeouts and 140 walks this season.
