Sailing Opens the Spring With a Pair of Regattas

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown sailing teams opened the spring portion of the season this past weekend with a pair of regattas. On the women's side, the Hoyas finished second of six schools competing. The coed squad was on its home water in the Potomac taking first place of five competitors.

Georgetown Team Race
1st of 5
  • Wills Cook, Audrey Fung; Mariner Fagan, Xavier Stoldt; Scott Mais, Emily Panarella; Mateo Di Blasi, Diego Escobar, Addi Harris, Spencer Kriegstein
  • With gusts over 40 mph, the teams were unable to compete on Saturday. The following day, a light southerly wind pushed the sailors for the first few races of the day before the wind did a quick switch to the NW and picked up to about 20 mph around 11 a.m. The first rotation was completed at 1 p.m., but it was determined that the second round wouldn't happen in time so racing was called for the day.
  • Georgetown went 3-1 in its races with wins over Cornell (1-2-3), Fordham (1-2-6) and Hobart & William (1-2-3). GU also had a sail off with Hobart & Williams resulting in the victory with a 1-2-3 finish.
  • The lone loss was a 2-4-5 decision against Penn.
ODU Women's Team Race
2nd of 6
  • Riley Kloc, Morgan Rice; Kelly Bates, Eva Fortunato; Piper Holthus, Louisa Buckingham, Kathryn Winters
  • On Saturday, the wind was 20-30 mph from the WNW, but by 2:30 p.m. it had calmed down enough to 16-22 mph WNW so that boats could get on the water. Sunday saw no wind all morning with a 5-8 knot NNW gust filling in to complete most of the second round.
  • The Hoyas were 7-2 overall for the second-place finish.
  • In round one, GU went 3-2 with victories over Old Dominion (1-2-5). Navy (2-3-5) and George Washington (1-2-5).
  • The second round saw the Hoyas get the perfect 4-0 result as the Blue & Gray defeated Navy (1-2-5), ODU (2-3-4), GW (1-4-5) and St. Mary's of Maryland (1-2-6).
Up Next
  • The Hoyas will be back in action next weekend as the coed team hosts the John Jackson Team Race on the Potomac.
