Georgetown Boasts Two Top Three Finishes

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown sailing team took second in the MAISA Women's Team Race Championship this past weekend in Ithaca, New York at the event hosted by Cornell. The co-ed squad stayed local and took second at the Truxtun Umsted hosted by Navy in Annapolis, Maryland.

MAISA Women's Team Race
3rd of 7
  • Kelly Bates, Audrey Fung; Piper Holthus, Louisa Buckingham; Riley Kloc, Addi Harris, Eva Fortunato, Margot Gordon, Kathryn Winters, Morgan Rice
  • Saturday started with a local north wind as the course was set, but the wind shifted causing a short delay with the start of the event. There were 33 completed races for a full round and a half with Penn leading the way.
  • On Sunday, south flow from the beginning allowed the course to be set on time and round two to finish swiftly. Following the third round, Cornell took the victory on its home waters.
  • Georgetown was 9-9 on the day going 3-3 in round one, before a 4-2 performance in the second. GU dropped off in the third with a 2-4 performance.
  • The Hoyas swept Hobart & William and Old Dominion in all three races.
Truxtun Umsted
2nd of 14
  • Saturday of the 2023 Truxtun Umsted regatta saw a SE breeze with 6-8 knots all day before storms moved in forcing the regatta to return to shore. Unfortunately, the storms and lightning continued to build and encircle the Annapolis area resulting in racing being called for the day.
  • Sunday started with a shore postponement while the sailors waited for a light south easterly wind and eventually racing got started in a five knot breeze with adverse current. These conditions stayed light all day.
  • The Hoyas took second with 74 total points as GU managed 34 points in A and 40 points in B.
  • Tulane won the regatta followed by GU, and Old Dominion took third.
Up Next
  • The women's team will compete at the MAISA Women's Fleet Race Championship next weekend in St. Mary's City, Maryland. The coed squad will make the trip to King's Point, New York for the Admiral's Cup.
