Hoyas Fall to Virginia in NCAA Quarterfinals

Box Score ALBANY, N.Y. – Georgetown University's men's lacrosse team fell 17-14 to Virginia in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon. The Hoyas wrap their 2023 campaign 13-4 overall after making their 11th quarterfinals appearance in program history.

Hoya Highlights

Brian Minicus led the Hoyas with four goals while Graham Bundy Jr. added two goals and two assists.
Aidan Carrol had two goals to go with an assist while Tucker Dordevic and Nicky Solomon both scored twice as well.
Jacob Kelly tallied a goal and an assist, Wallace Halpert scored once and both TJ Haley and Declan McDermott were credited with an assist.

Defensively, James Donaldson was credited with two caused turnovers. Will Bowen had six ground balls and Will Godine added four.
James Reilly won 15 of 31 (.483) faceoffs and hauled in 10 ground balls.
In goal, Danny Hincks (7-4) collected 11 saves in the loss.

How it Happened

Virginia (13-3) scored two early goals in the first 16 seconds before Minicus put the Hoyas on the board at the 13:44 mark. A high-scoring opening quarter saw 11 combined goals as UVA took a 7-4 lead after 15 minutes of action.
In the second, Georgetown scored three of the first four goals in the frame to pull within one, down 8-7 at the 9:35 mark. The two teams would trade goals the rest of the half, including a Solomon goal with 0.7 seconds on the clock to make it a 10-9 Cavalier lead going into halftime.
Coming out of the break, another Minicus goal evened things up at 10-10, and following another Virginia goal, Solomon's second of the day tied things up at 11-11. Virginia responded with four unanswered goals to close out the quarter and take a 15-11 lead heading into the final stanza.
In the fourth, a Dordevic goal was quickly answered by UVA and Georgetown's late rally wasn't enough in the 17-14 loss.

Virginia Notes

Connor Shellenberger led the Cavaliers with six goals and four assists while Xander Dickson added two goals and two assists.
Petey LaSalla won 17 of 34 (.500) faceoffs and collected 10 ground balls.
Defensively, Cole Kastner had four caused turnovers and three ground balls.
In goal, Matthew Nunes had 13 saves in the win.
