Sailing Starts the Season With a Pair of First-Place Finishes

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University sailing team started off the 2023-24 season with some impressive performances winning both coed regattas this past weekend. Fresh off of a fourth-place finish at last year's ICSA Fleet Racing National Championship the coed team served notice that they would be among the elite teams in college sailing.

Riley Cup
1st, 2nd of 16
  • Eight sailors competed at the Riley Cup regatta at Old Dominion University.
  • Over two light windy and stormy days, only eight races total were completed but that was enough for the Hoyas to build a decent lead on the competition.
  • The team of Mateo DiBlasi, Addi Harris, Enzo Menditto and Spencer Kriegstein won the event narrowly beating the other GU team of Diego Escobar, Marguerite Montagner, Piper Holthus and Audrey Fung.
  • Host Old Dominion team finished in fifth and sixth while, the Naval Academy took fourth overall.
Laser South
1st, 3rd, 9th, 16th of 17
  • Closer to home at the United States Naval Academy, the Hoyas' singlehanded sailors began their quest to reach the national championship with their first ladder event - the Laser South Regatta.
  • Light winds and storms were also prevalent over the weekend, and that limited the regatta to five of the scheduled 14 races.
  • Freshman Peter Barnard, the reigning High School National Champion, started off with a bang winning the regatta over teammate Benjamin Smith who tied for second. The Georgetown duo will be joined at the conference championship by sophomore Leighton Farrel who snuck into the final qualifying spot by virtue of finishing in ninth overall.
  • Junior Anson Walker ended up in 16th place. Barnard, Smith and Farrel will compete at the conference championship in two weeks.
Navy Women's Fleet Race
7th of 9
  • The women's team also started competition this weekend, and with two-time All-American Piper Holthus and crew Audrey Fung sailing on the coed team, some of the younger sailors were given a chance to compete at the Navy Women's Fleet Race.
  • Sophomore skipper Kelly Bates and crews Margot Gordon and Anna Brzezinski made quite an impression finishing in third only one point out of first place.
  • Sophomore Alexa Shea and crews Morgan Rice and Lucy Jervis had some trouble getting going in the light and lumpy conditions and finished in 16th.
Up Next
  • The Hoyas will be back at the Naval Academy next weekend for the Women's Singlehanded Championship and Chesapeake Bay Invite.
