No. 14/14 Georgetown Downs Rutgers

WASHINGTON – The No. 14/14 Hoyas downed the Rutgers Scarlet Knights 2-0 on Monday afternoon. With the win, the Hoyas move to 4-0-1 on the season while Rutgers slides to 2-2-2.

Head Coach Dave Nolan
"I am so proud of our girls this afternoon; this was a very tough game to begin with as we have been dealing with a medical issue all week. Our numbers were starting to be affected and really up until Saturday we were not sure if we were going to have enough players to play the game. The good thing is we got the game in and the win and the kids responded so well to the adversity that was thrown their way. We were exceptional today; it was probably our best performance of the season thus far and we kept a very good Rutgers team very quiet on the offensive end. Our forwards scored two really good goals and we managed the game really well and like I said handled the adversity thrown our way. We are very excited to get this win on the road as it was a great confidence boost for our team. All in all, it was a great day, and we look forward to being back at home this Thursday against James Madison."

About the Match
  • Neither team looked particularly dangerous early on into the contest. The Hoyas earned the first shot of the contest in the 22nd minute.
  • In the 33rd minute Georgetown had the best chance of the game to that point as Allie Winstanley sent a cross across the box from the left side of the field and Grace Sherman connected on a full volley, but the Rutgers goalkeeper was able to tip the shot over the net for a GU corner.
  • GU continued to press, taking five more shots in the final 13 minutes of the half but was unable to find the back of the net as both sides were even heading into the half.
  • The Hoyas came out of the half and began to press the Scarlet Knights. In the 54th minute, Henley Tippins found the back of the net off a corner kick from Tatum Lenain tallying her first goal of the 2023 season.
  • Georgetown won the ball back shortly after the kickoff in the 56th minute and Lenain played a ball out to Erika Harwood on the left side of the field. Harwood drove towards the baseline and played a ball back towards the penalty spot and Winstanley beat her defender and hit a hard low shot to the back post beating the Rutgers goalie for the Hoyas second tally of the contest.
  • GU was able to fend off the Scarlet Knights efforts to equalize and the Hoyas captured their fourth win of the season 2-0.
Of Note
  • Allie Augur made five saves en route to her fourth-consecutive shutout.
  • Winstanley scored her first goal as a Hoya.
  • Tippins notched her first tally of the season.
  • Lenain and Harwood each recorded an assist.
  • GU outshot Rutgers 15-8.
