Hoyas Host Butler in the District on Tuesday

WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's men's basketball team returns home to Capital One Arena to host the visiting Butler University Bulldogs on Tuesday, January 23. Tipoff in the District is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on FS1. Georgetown is coming off a heartbreaking 92-91 loss at Xavier on Friday night. Despite one of its best offensive performances at Cintas Center, the Hoyas were unable to find the last-second heroics and enter Tuesday's contest at 8-10 on the season with a 1-5 mark in BIG EAST play. Butler comes into the game at 12-7 on the season with a 3-5 mark in league action after a 74-60 win against DePaul at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Saturday.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • Georgetown is looking to bounce back from a heartbreaking 92-91 setback at Xavier on Friday night. Jayden Epps led all scorers with 32 points on nine made field goals to go along with a perfect 11-for-11 effort from the charity stripe to go along with a career-high 11 assists for the first double-double of his career. Jay Heath chipped in 16 points, while Dontrez Styles added 14 and Supreme Cook recorded 13. Styles also grabbed a game-best 10 rebounds for the third double-double of his career.
  • Epps tops the BIG EAST in scoring with 18.9 ppg and leads a trio in double figures as Styles (13.5 ppg) and Cook (11.1 ppg) round out those in double digits.
  • Cook's 8.2 rpg is fifth among the league while Styles pulls down 5.9 rpg.
  • Epps dishes out a squad-best 4.5 apg, ranking eighth among the BIG EAST while his 2.5 3-pointers per game is good enough for sixth.
  • With an efficient 64.5% (71-110) performance from the floor, Cook leads the BE in field goal percentage. Cook leads the BIG EAST and is fifth in the nation with 4.1 offensive boards per game.
  • The Hoyas are led by Ed Cooley who is in his 18th season as a collegiate head coach and his first season with Georgetown. In 2022, Cooley was the recipient of the Naismith Coach of the Year Award, named the Sporting News Coach of the Year, the BIG EAST Coach of the Year, the NABC District 5 Coach of the Year and the USBWA District 1 Coach of the Year.
 
ABOUT THE BULLDOGS
  • Butler used a big first half en route to a 74-60 win against DePaul at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Saturday. A trio of Bulldogs tallied double figures, led by Pierre Brooks' 20 points while DJ Davis and Posh Alexander each added 17 apiece. Jahmyl Telfort grabbed a game-best nine rebounds in the contest while Alexander paced the offense with six helpers.
  • Brooks leads a quartet of Bulldogs in double figures, averaging 16.6 ppg, good enough for fifth in the BIG EAST. He is followed by Telfort (13.3 ppg), Davis (12.6 ppg) and Alexander (11.5 ppg).
  • Jalen Thomas grabs a squad-best 7.1 rpg to rank 10th in the league.
  • Alexander ranks fourth in the conference dishing out 5.3 apg while his 2.4 spg tops the league.
  • The Bulldogs are led by Head Coach Thad Matta, in his second season of his second stint at Butler. The BU grad returned to his alma mater at the beginning of the 2022-23 season after previously serving as the head coach during the 2000-01 season.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES WITH BUTLER
  • Tuesday's matchup will be the 24th all-time between the two programs, dating back to a 2009 nonconference matchup between the squads. Butler took the 12-11 advantage in the series with a 74-64 win at Hinkle Fieldhouse earlier this year. Styles led a trio of Hoyas in double figures with 19 points, followed by 12 points from Epps off the bench and 10 points from Cook.
  • Cooley is 18-6 all-time against Butler. Cooley and Matta have faced each other four times previously with each coach winning a pair of games.
