Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Hoyas Blank Providence 1-0

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's soccer team defeated the Providence College Friars 1-0 on Thursday evening tallying the Hoyas' 10th shutout of the season. With the win, GU improves to 9-2-4 and 5-1-1 in BIG EAST play while Providence slides to 5-8-1 and 2-4 in conference action.

Head Coach Dave Nolan
"Tonight was certainly a hard-fought victory against a tough Providence team that was desperate for points. Give them credit, they pressed us hard for 90 minutes which made it hard for us to find a rhythm. We took advantage of one of the few moments we had in the first half when Eliza Turner played a great ball for Maya Lardner to run on to and finish. It was a brave play from Eliza as she got smashed in the process but that's what makes her special, she is brave as can be.

The second half was similar, but we had a few more moments that we were unable to take advantage of. Providence hung around and we couldn't quite get the second goal, however, I thought our back line managed them pretty well, not really giving them too many chances. Their best chance came with 30 seconds left and we needed Anna Karpenko to make a good save. Another BIG EAST battle as we now turn our attention towards senior day against Marquette on Sunday."

About the Match
  • Georgetown started the game firing on all cylinders. In the ninth minute, Eliza Turner played a through ball to Maja Lardner. The senior was able to get on the other end of it, firing a one touch shot past the Friar goalkeeper to give GU an early 1-0 lead.
  • GU continued to press Providence early and in the 32nd minute, Shay Montgomery had another good chance for the Hoyas, but Providence keeper Emma Bodmer stood tall.
  • The Blue & Gray took the 1-0 advantage into the break after outshooting the Friars 5-3 in the first frame.
  • The first 15 minutes of the second half was even between the two sides with neither side having any dangerous opportunities.
  • In the waning minutes of the game, Providence had a golden opportunity inside the box off a corner kick. Anna Karpenko stood tall, flying through the air pushing the ball wide of the net preserving the GU lead.
  • The Friars were unable to find the equalizer as GU picked up its ninth victory of the season.
