No. 20 Georgetown Draws Butler 1-1

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's soccer team drew the Butler Bulldogs on Thursday evening. With the draw, GU moves to 7-1-4 and 3-0-1 in conference action while Butler moves to 6-3-3 and 1-1-2 in BIG EAST play.

Head Coach Dave Nolan
"Tonight's game was an exciting game for any neutral spectators but to be fair, it was probably a frustrating match for both coaching staffs, as both teams really pushed to win it, and both had chances to do so.

I thought that overall, we did a lot of good things and with some more game poise and some good fortune could have had one or two more. However, Butler is an excellent team with a very special player. We kept her quiet for most of the night, but she did some of her magic to give them the lead and it wasn't against the run of play. Credit to our group we kept pushing and put them under some real pressure which resulted in a penalty kick call in our favor. It was only fitting that Eliza Turner slotted home the equalizer as she was the best player on the field in my opinion.

In the six times we have played at Butler, we have only won once, with the tie tonight and the previous three occasions also ending in a tie. We now have to regroup to play a dangerous St. John's team that is hungry for conference victories on Sunday at Shaw Field."

About the Match
  • Just minutes into the match, Georgetown had a fantastic chance as Maja Lardner was one-on-one with a defender in the box and beat her inside. The senior lasered a shot on goal that the Butler keeper was able to deflect out of bounds for a Hoya corner.
  • GU continued to press early but the Bulldogs had moments of their own. In the 35th minute, Leila Lister had a great look on goal inside the 18-yard box, but Cara Martin halted the Bulldogs efforts making her lone save of the half.
  • The score remained even heading into the break with GU outshooting Butler 7-6 in the first half.
  • In the 61st minute, Butler was able to strike first as Talia Sommer put one past Anna Karpenko giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 advantage.
  • Georgetown was threatening in the 82nd minute when Lardner attempted a cross inside the box that hit a Butler defender's hand. GU was awarded a penalty kick after review and Eliza Turner calmly stepped up to the spot and converted her second penalty kick of the season to even the score at 1-1.
  • Neither side was able to find a winner in the final seven minutes of action as the contest ended in a 1-1 draw.

Notable Stats
  • Martin made one save.
  • Turner tallied her fifth goal of the season.

  • The Blue & Gray held the advantage in corner kicks 8-4.
