WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's soccer team defeated the St. John's Red Storm 3-0 on Sunday afternoon. With the win, GU improves to 8-1-4 and 4-0-1 in BIG EAST play while SJU slides to 5-4-4 and 0-3-2 in conference action.
Head Coach Dave Nolan
"It was another tough game for us, and it took us a while to get to the final score line. You have to give St. John's credit, they came into the game with a good gameplan. When it was 0-0 and 1-0, they were very much in the game, and it took us getting that second to open the game up a bit more. Credit to them, they are a tough team to play against and Ian does a good job of getting his girls organized and ready to play. For us, I thought our first half was very flat and I am disappointed with how we played as I felt like we were in second gear. It was better in the second half, and I challenged them at halftime to get a little more pressure on them and be more aggressive in trying to make things happen. Once we scored our second goal, we could breathe a little bit and with a bit of luck probably could have had another one or two. We are happy with the shutout and another three points and now we thankfully have a week to prepare for our trip out to DePaul which is another difficult place to play."
About the Match
- Georgetown started the match pressing the Red Storm early. Through the first 15 minutes of action, GU was able to get two shots off while limiting the Johnnies to zero.
- In the 31st minute, Claire Manning played a ball in from the left flank floating it towards the back post. Cyanne Doyle made a beautiful run getting on the end of the cross and the senior headed it over the outstretched SJU goalkeeper to give the Hoyas a 1-0 lead just before the break.
- GU took the one goal advantage into the break and outshot the Red Storm 7-2 in the first 45 minutes.
- After the break Georgetown continued to look dominant, but in the 58th minute St. John's had its best opportunity of the day, rattling one off the crossbar.
- In the 67th minute, Shay Montgomery was streaking down the middle of the field and played a through ball to Maja Lardner. The senior ran onto the ball beating her defender before slotting one to the back post giving GU a 2-0 advantage.
- A mere seven minutes later, GU earned a free kick just outside the Red Storm 18-yard box. Eliza Turner stepped up to take the kick and hammered it into the top right corner extending the Hoya lead to three.
