Women's Cross Country Punches Ticket to NCAA Cross Country Championships, Men Fight for Bid

WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's men's and women's cross country teams finished up their competition in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship at Penn State University in University Park, Pennsylvania. The women finished second out of 30 teams with a team score of 58 points. With the second-place finish, the women clinched an automatic bid to the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Madison, Wisconsin. The men finished third out of 27 teams with a team score of 80 points, coming up short of an auto bid to the NCAA Championships off of a tiebreaker with Princeton. The men's team finished behind No. 14 Villanova and No. 18 Princeton and will have to wait until the selection show to see if they receive an at-large bid.

ON THE RECORD
"I couldn't be more proud of how well our Men & Women represented our program today. Our Women earned an automatic bid with their runner-up finish as a team and will be ready to go next week at the NCAA Championships in Madison. Our Men were tied for 2nd with 80 points (but relegated to third overall due to a tiebreaker); falling short of the automatic bid but running what I would surmise as their best race as a team, and I believe they did enough to earn an at-large bid. We'll have to wait and see what the selection process reflects. What is certain is they left their best effort out on the course today, and that's all we can ever ask for. Congrats to coaches Baker, Bonsey & Clark for preparing the teams to be ready when it matters most and we're looking forward to wrapping up a great XC Season at the NCAA Championships, hopefully with both teams." - Director of Track & Field/Cross Country, Alton McKenize

"The women were solid today despite not being at full strength. West Virginia is a great team and hard to beat in normal circumstances, so to be in the same field with them and to also hold off a strong Penn State squad is a good sign for next week. We look on track to be healthier by next week, but no matter what happens there, I liked what I saw today. Scrimgeour continues to build momentum, Jenks is putting all of the pieces together, and our next five worked well together. I think there's one more level of progress inside this group, and we're excited to chase that next week at the NCAAs." - Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Head Coach Mitchell Baker

"I think this was the best meet the men have run all season. Very frustrating to lose the auto bid to Princeton on a tiebreaker but I think today's performance gives us a good chance of receiving an at-large bid. I am very proud of the effort from the men today." - Men's Track & Field /Cross Country Head Coach Brandon Bonsey
