WASHINGTON – Five Hoyas found their way to the podium as day two of the 2026 BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships presented by Jeep came to a close on Friday at the Sherman Sports Complex in Storrs, Connecticut.
Barrett Justema etched her name into the record books in the women's 3,000m steeplechase, breaking the program record by 0.14 seconds with a time of 10:04.25 to take second place, followed by
Lillie Bogdan in third. The distance squads kept rolling with a 2-3 finish from
Birhanu Harriman and
Luke Johnson in the men's 5,000m, and
Almi Nerurkar claimed silver in the women's 5,000m.
"We had some fantastic performances from our Hoya men and women as we got into day two of these Championships. Podium performances from Barrett and Lillie in Women's 3K Steeplechase (2nd and 3rd, respectively), followed by a second-place finish for Almi in the women's 5K, put valuable points on the board. On the men's side, Birhanu and Luke followed suit in the men's 5K, which certainly ended what was a strong night for the Hoyas. We have multiple finalists across several events for Saturday and look forward to more podium finishes and hopefully a few wins." - Head Coach
Alton McKenzie
"After missing the championship season indoor it was great to see (Emma) Bennett make a controlled and poised debut by following Tomkinson, in her final Big East meet, into an auto-qualifying spot to tomorrow's final. Those championship lessons are critical to pass down to the next generation. Although her season debut in the uniform, Justema raced with patience and made the last 1,200 very interesting in the steeple. Although she came up a bit short of the win, she grabbed herself a PR and brought freshman teammate Bogdan to a PR and onto the podium with her. It was great to see four steeplers out there, a first for Georgetown at the Big East meet. Nerurkar managed a very competitive second in the 5K in a field where I thought 6-8 were good enough to be in the mix, so to see her manage a very, very slow early mile and a massive gear change was impressive and shows a lot of growth as a racer; it looked like she might climb back to the leader late but settled for a hard-fought silver." - Assistant Coach
Mitchell Baker
"The team is off to a great start thus far. This is one of the best distance conferences in the country, so having three guys already reach the podium is a big deal. Mac, Birhanu and Luke all executed great races and scored big points for the team. We are very excited for the last day of completion as well as how this prepares us for the regional meet." - Assistant Coach
