No. 1 Seeded Georgetown Faces UConn in BIG EAST Championship Semifinal

WASHINGTON – The first seeded Georgetown University women's soccer team is set to face the University of Connecticut Huskies in the BIG EAST Semifinal on Thursday, November 7 at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Maryland. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. GU enters the contest with a 12-2-4 record (8-1-1 BE) while the Huskies enter the match with a 11-4-4 record (4-3-3 BE).

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • No. 20/16 Georgetown (12-2-4, 8-1-1 BE) is coming off a 2-0 victory on Thursday afternoon against Xavier. With the win, GU secured its third-consecutive regular season title.
  • Maja Lardner was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year after tallying a league-best 27 points on 10 goals and seven assists. In conference action, Lardner tallied six goals and four assists. The senior earned four weekly honors this season, three of which were Offensive Player of the Week honors.
  • Cara Martin was named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year after posting a 0.20 GAA across 18 games this season. In conference play, Martin boasts a 0/17 GAA and has conceded one goal in 527 minutes of action. The junior went 8-0 in conference action and contributed to all seven of GU's conference shutouts.
  • Georgetown's coaching staff was named the 2024 BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year after leading the Blue & Gray to a 12-2-4 record this season. The last time Head Coach Nolan and his staff were recognized was in 2022 when the Hoyas went 15-2-5 while earning a spot in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
  • Lardner, Martin, Eliza Turner, Natalie Means and Lawson Renie all earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST First Team. Freshman Lizzie Heller earned a nod to the All-BIG EAST Third Team after a remarkable freshman campaign on the Hilltop.
  • Lardner currently ranks 10th nationally in game-winning goals with five this season. Lardner ranks top-35 nationally in total points (27), shots on goal per game (1.89), shots per game (4.17), points per game (1.50) and goals per game (0.56).
  • GU ranks second nationally in shutout percentage (0.722) and third nationally in goals against average (0.389).
  • Georgetown currently ranks eighth nationally in shots per game (20.11), fourth in the nation in corner kicks per game (8.28) and 16th in shots on goal per game (8.56).
  • GU ranks in the top 30 nationally in 12 different statistical categories. GU is top 10 nationally in corner kicks per game, goal differential, goals against average, save percentage, shots per game, shutout percentage and penalty kicks.
ABOUT UCONN
  • UConn (11-4-4, 4-3-3 BE) is coming off a 2-0 road victory against Creighton in the BIG EAST Championship Quarterfinals.
  • The Husky offense is paced by All-BIG EAST First Team selection Chioma Okafor. The junior has 12 goals and three assists on the season, good for a team-best 27 points.
  • Kaitlyn Mahoney has logged 1,495 minutes in goal for UConn this season. The graduate student boasts a 0.96 GAA and is credited with 47 saves this season.
ABOUT THE SERIES
  • In the last meeting between the two sides on September 29, GU captured a 3-1 road victory over UConn. The Hoyas were fueled by goals from Heller, Lardner and Means.
  • Georgetown is 8-12-1 in the all-timer series with UConn. In the last five contests, The Blue & Gray are 3-1-1 with the lone loss to the Huskies coming in 2021 in a narrow 1-0 defeat.
  • GU faced UConn in the BIG EAST Championship Semifinals a year ago and earned a 1-0 victory to advance to the title match where Georgetown would eventually secure its fourth-consecutive conference title.
 
WHAT LIES AHEAD
If the Hoyas are able to defeat UConn, GU will face the winner of Xavier vs. DePaul in the BIG EAST Championship final on Sunday, November 10.
