Georgetown Men’s Basketball Set to Host Fairfield at Capital One Arena on Saturday

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team is set to make its Capital One Arena debut on Saturday, November 9, as the Fairfield Stags visit the Nation's Capital. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on FS2. The Blue & Gray enter Saturday's contest with a 1-0 record after securing an 85-77 win over Lehigh at McDonough Arena on Wednesday night.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • The Hoyas are led by Ed Cooley who enters his 19th season as a collegiate head coach and his second with Georgetown. In 2022, Cooley was the recipient of the Naismith Coach of the Year Award, named the Sporting News Coach of the Year, the BIG EAST Coach of the Year, the NABC District 5 Coach of the Year and the USBWA District 1 Coach of the Year. 
  • Cooley began his collegiate coaching career at Fairfield University as the head coach of the Stags from 2006-11, tallying a 92-69 record and leading them to a regular season Metro Atlantic Athletic League (MAAC) title in 2010-11.
  • Georgetown won its season opener on Wednesday, defeating the Lehigh University Mountain Hawks, 85-77, at McDonough Arena.
  • Freshman Thomas Sorber and graduate student Micah Peavy led the scoring for the Hoyas, tallying 20 points apiece. Jayden Epps and Malik Mack rounded out an attack of four Hoyas in double figures, finishing with 17 and 15, respectively. 
  • Sorber led the Hoyas on the glass, tallying 13 rebounds en route to his first collegiate double-double. 
  • Mack paced the Hoya offense with five assists followed by Epps who chipped in three. Peavy and Sorber both led the squad in steals with three apiece while Sorber and Jordan Burks each recorded a pair of blocks.
  • As a team, the Hoyas shot 48.4% (31-64) from the field and 78.3% (18-23) from the charity stripe.
 
ABOUT THE STAGS
  • Fairfield tipped off the 2024-25 campaign on Monday, November 4 at Rhode Island. The Stags dropped their opening contest, 96-58. Senior Guard Louis Bleechmore led Fairfield in scoring, finishing with 13 points.
  • The Stags are coming off of a 24-13 season a year ago, where they finished second in the MAAC with a 14-6 record in conference play. The Stags came up one win shy of the NCAA tournament, falling to Saint Peter's in the MAAC championship game 68-63 on March 16, 2024.
  • Fairfield's eight returners are comprised of three players who appeared in 25+ games last season (Bleechmore, Seck, Smith), four who played in between eight and 17 games (Curtis, Davidson, McPartlan) and one who did not see game action in 2024-25 (Ganton).
  • The Stags 10 newcomers are made up of seven student-athletes who have spent time on a Division I roster (Bergens, Best, Jenkins, Johnson, Perry, Riek, Sparks), one true freshmen (Munkadi), and two sophomores in their first season of college basketball (May, Ostop).
  • Fairfield is led by Head Coach Chris Casey, who spent the 2023-24 season in an interim role and was named the 14th head coach in program history in March. 
 
ABOUT THE SERIES WITH FAIRFIELD
  • The Blue & Gray holds a 15-4 all-time record against Fairfield dating back to 1960. The last time the two sides met was on December 1, 2007, where Georgetown secured a 61-49 win over a Cooley-led Fairfield squad. 
  • This marks Cooley's first matchup against his former school as the coach of the Hoyas. Cooley holds a 5-0 record against his former school, with the last matchup dating back to November 9, 2021.
  • Georgetown holds an all-time record of 87-43 against the MAAC.
