Georgetown Men’s Basketball Set to Host UMBC in Monday Night Matchup

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team will host the UMBC Retrievers on Monday night at Capital One Arena. Tipoff is slated for 6:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on FS1. The Blue & Gray enter Monday's contest with a 6-1 record following a decisive 100-68 victory over UAlbany on Saturday in the District.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • Georgetown heads into Monday's game at 6-1 on the season following a victory over the UAlbany Great Danes, 100-68, at Capital One Arena.
  • Micah Peavy led the offensive attack for the Hoyas, tallying 24 points on nine made field goals. Malik Mack (16), Thomas Sorber (14), Jordan Burks (11) and Drew Fielder (10) rounded out the quintet of Hoyas scoring in double figures. As a team, GU shot 63.1% (41-65) from the floor and 40.9% (9-22) from beyond the arc. Sorber recorded his third double-double of the season with a team-high 13 rebounds.
  • The Blue & Gray scored 100 points for the first time since December 8, 2021, when they defeated UMBC 100-71 at Capital One Arena, while also recording the highest assist total (26) since a 91-74 win at SMU on December 9, 2019.
  • Saturday's game saw the Hoyas post the highest field goal percentage (63.1%) since January 28, 2017, when GU shot 63.8% in an 85-81 victory over Butler.
  • Peavy leads the Hoyas in scoring with 15.9 ppg, followed by Sorber at 14.7 ppg, Jayden Epps with 13.6 ppg, and Mack contributing 13.0 ppg, rounding out a quartet of Hoyas averaging double figures. All four are ranked among the top 30 in the league.
  • Sorber is tied for first in the league in rebounds grabbing 9.0 rpg. Fielder and Mack follow pulling down 4.7 rpg and 4.4 rpg, respectively.
  • Georgetown is second in the BIG EAST in steals and 18th in the country, averaging 10.4 per game. Peavy is currently leading the BIG EAST and ranks third nationally with 3.3 steals per game.
  • On Monday, Sorber earned his second BIG EAST Freshman of the Week nod following two impressive performances in a 2-0 week for GU. He averaged 11.5 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 3.5 apg, 2.0 spg, and 2.0 bpg while shooting an efficient 10-of-14 from the field.
  • Epps was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after averaging 21.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 2.0 spg and a season-best 23 points over Saint Francis.
  • The Hoyas are led by Ed Cooley who enters his 19th season as a collegiate head coach and his second with Georgetown. In 2022, Cooley was the recipient of the Naismith Coach of the Year Award, named the Sporting News Coach of the Year, the BIG EAST Coach of the Year, the NABC District 5 Coach of the Year and the USBWA District 1 Coach of the Year.
 
ABOUT THE UMBC RETRIEVERS
  • UMBC comes into Monday's matchup with a 5-4 record following a dominant 92-69 victory over Morgan State on Wednesday, November 27. Marcus Banks Jr. led the Retrievers with 14 points, shooting an efficient 5-for-7 from the field, while Bryce Johnson and Devan Sapp contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively.
  • Johnson leads UMBC in scoring with an average of 15.9 points per game, followed by Banks Jr., who averages 13.3 points, and Josh Odunowo, contributing 10.8 points per game.
  • On the glass, Banks Jr. leads the Retrievers with 5.1 rpg.
  • Head Coach Jim Ferry enters his fourth season leading UMBC, holding a 47-49 overall record. Last season, the Retrievers finished with an 11-21 overall record and went 6-10 in America East play.
