Georgetown Hosts Creighton to Open BIG EAST Play

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team will host the Creighton Bluejays on Wednesday evening at Capital One Arena. Tipoff is slated for 6:30 p.m. in Washington, D.C. and the game will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network. The Blue & Gray enters Wednesday's contest with a 8-2 record following a 75-71 victory over longtime rival Syracuse on Saturday.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • In a game that was tied 11 times and saw 16 lead changes, the Georgetown University men's basketball team closed on a 17-7 run to solidify a 75-71 road win against longtime rival Syracuse on Saturday at the JMA Wireless Dome. Jayden Epps poured in 27 points on 11-for-15 shooting, including a quartet of 3-pointers, to lead a trio of Hoyas in double figures. Thomas Sorber added 16 points on seven made field goals to go along with seven boards and two blocks. Micah Peavy added 12 points while also grabbing a squad-best nine rebounds and dishing out four assists.
  • For his efforts against the Orange, Epps earned BIG EAST Player of the Week Honors on Monday for the first time in his career. The honor marks the first time since December 16, 2019 (Mac McClung) a Georgetown student-athlete has earned the accolade.
  • Epps and Sorber lead the squad in scoring averaging 15.5 ppg apiece. Peavy (13.4) and Malik Mack (12.3) round out the Hoyas averaging double figures. All four are ranked among the top 30 in scoring in the BIG EAST.
  • Sorber leads the squad on the glass grabbing 8.2 rpg to rank second in the league, followed by Drew Fielder who's pulling down 5.6 rpg and Mack (4.5 rpg).
  • Mack's 4.3 apg paces the offense and he ranks 10th in the league in helpers.
  • Peavy is tied for eighth in the country and leads the BIG EAST in steals per game, picking 2.80 pockets per game.
  • Defensively, the team ranks second in the league and 29th nationally in steals per game (9.7). The Hoyas are forcing opponents to commit 15.60 turnovers per game, which ranks second in the conference.
  • Sorber has three double-doubles to his name, tied for third in the league.
 
ABOUT THE BLUEJAYS
  • Creighton is 7-4 this year against a challenging non-conference schedule that included three Associated Press Top 25 opponents. Most recently, the Bluejays fell 83-75 at then-No. 7 Alabama. Steven Ashworth (20), Ryan Kalkbrenner (18), Jackson McAndrew (16) and Jamiya Neal (13) scored in double-figures for CU, with Ashworth also matching his career-high with nine assists. CU made 45.0 percent of its attempts from the floor and 29.6 percent from deep.
  • Kalkbrenner (17.4 ppg, 8.3 rpg, 2.5 bpg, 72.0 FG%) was named Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year and has been named a Preseason First Team All-American by CBS Sports, Fox Sports and Field of 68. Kalkbrenner is also a three-time BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year. 
  • Ashworth (16.3 ppg, 6.2 apg) is back to run the point and is joined on the wing by Arizona State transfer Neal (10.7 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 4.5 apg).
  • Greg McDermott owns a 332-164 record in his 15th season with the Bluejays, as he passed Dana Altman (327-176) as the winningest coach in program history on Nov. 13, 2024. He owns a career mark of 612-359 in his 31st season, and is 481-295 in his 24th Division I campaign.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES WITH CREIGHTON
  • Wednesday's game will be the 26th all-time meeting between the two teams dating back to 1970.
  • Georgetown trails the all-time series 16-9. The last win for the Blue & Gray was a 73-48 win at MSG on March 13, 2021 in the BIG EAST Tournament Championship Game. 
  • Georgetown currently sits at 5-6 against Creighton at home.
  • This will be the 27th time Coach Cooley has faced the Bluejays in his career. He is 13-13 against Creighton all-time and this will be the 26th meeting between Cooley and McDermott.
