Georgetown Hosts Coppin State in Final Contest of 2024

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team heads back home for a matchup against Coppin State on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is scheduled for noon at Capital One Arena and the game will be broadcast on FS1. The Blue & Gray enters Saturday's contest with a 10-2 record overall and a 2-0 mark in league action following a 61-60 win over Seton Hall on Sunday to give the Hoyas their first 2-0 start in league play since 2015-16.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • On Sunday, the Hoyas defeated the Seton Hall Pirates 61-60 at Prudential Center. Thomas Sorber led the Hoyas with 19 points to go along with a team-high eight rebounds and four blocks. Jayden Epps recorded 15 points while Micah Peavy rounded out those in double figures with 10 to go along with a team high five helpers. GU shot 53.5% (23-43) from the field while holding the Pirates to 29.9% (20-67) shooting and 12.5% (3-24) from behind the arc. The Hoyas did not trail the Pirates in this contest and led for more than 37 minutes.
  • For his efforts in a 2-0 week that saw wins over Creighton and at Seton Hall, Epps was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after averaging 18.0 ppg on 47.8% (11-23) shooting. The junior went 6-for-11 (54.5%) from downtown while chipping in 3.0 rpg, 2.5 apg and 2.0 spg.
  • Epps leads a quartet of Hoyas in double figures, averaging 15.9 ppg, good enough to rank ninth in the BIG EAST. Thomas Sorber chips in 15.2 ppg, followed by Peavy (13.7) and Malik Mack (12.3). With all four ranking among the top 30 in scoring in the BIG EAST, Georgetown joins UConn as the two schools to achieve that feat.
  • Sorber leads the squad on the glass grabbing 8.0 rpg to rank second in the league, followed by Drew Fielder (5.1 rpg) and Peavy (4.7 rpg).
  • Mack and Peavy pace the offence, dishing out 4.3 apg apiece.
  • Peavy ranks fifth in the country and leads the BIG EAST in steals per game, picking 2.92 pockets per game.
  • Sorber has three double-doubles to his name, tied for third in the league.
  • Defensively, the team ranks second in the league and 25th nationally in steals per game (9.7). The Hoyas are forcing opponents to commit 15.17 turnovers per game, which ranks third in the conference.
 
ABOUT THE EAGLES
  • In its most recent matchup, Coppin State defeated Navy 68-60 and enters Saturday's game with a 1-12 overall record. Toby Nnadozie led the Eagles in scoring with 20 points on 6-for-13 shooting from the floor. Johnathan Dunn and Julius Ellerbe III led Coppin State in rebounds pulling down eight boards apiece. Ellerbe III paced the offense for the Eagles, tallying six assists.
  • Despite not appearing in a game since November 14, Derrius Ward leads Coppin State in scoring averaging 12.4 ppg. Nnadozie follows up with 9.2 ppg while Ellerbe III and Dunn chip in 8.5 ppg and 8.4 ppg, respectively.
  • Ellerbe III leads Coppin State on the glass with 5.5 rpg, followed by Ward (5.0 rpg) and Dunn (4.4 rpg).
  • Cam'Ron Brown paces the offense, dishing out 2.7 apg.
  • Larry Stewart is in his second season at the helm of the Eagles. In 2023-24, he went 2-27 and 1-13 in conference play.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES WITH COPPIN STATE
  • Saturday's game will be the sixth all-time meeting between the two teams dating back to 2016.
  • Georgetown leads the all-time series 5-0. The last win for the Blue & Gray was a 71-54 win at Capital One Arena on December 12, 2023.
  • This will be the second time Head Coach Ed Cooley will face Coppin State in his career (1-0) and the fifth time Cooley faces a Mid Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opponent (4-0).
