WASHINGTON- Georgetown University's track & field program kicked off its season with a doubleheader on Saturday, competing in the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener in Boston and the Penn Opener in Philadelphia.
Rebecca Ochan set a new school record in the women's 300m with a time of 38.21 and Tinoda Matsatsa broke the school record in the men's mile with a time of 3:54.15.
Head Coach Alton McKenzie
"What a great kick off to our Indoor Season. Matsatsa has continued his rewriting of our Hoya Record Books; 3:54.15 in his 1st collegiate mile is absolutely amazing. Not only a school record but the fastest time in NCAA this season. We also had some Hoyas in Philly at UPenn's new Indoor track. Highlights from that meet saw newcomer Jaden Marchan winning the 600m in a very impressive 1:17.74 with his teammate Nata Vigo Catala not far behind finishing 3rd in 1:18.47. Marchan also ran a splendid anchor leg to secure victory in the 4x400m Relay that ran 3:12.49. On the women's side Ochan showed she will be a force to reckon with this season by shattering the school record in the 300m, winning in a time of 38.21. Though an off event it is a great indicator of what's attainable, with such a big improvement from her previous best of 38.95. We will take the positives & learning experiences from these meets to carry into the winter break and look forward to seeing what will come in January as we build towards a great 2024-2025 Indoor Season.."
Assistant Coach Brandon Bonsey
"Tinoda is one of the best young middle distance prospects in the world and he proved that again yesterday. He hadn't run an event above the 1000 since high school and he opened his season with a school record and NCAA leading time of 3:54. It's really hard to run fast middle distance times this early so this bodes well for what the rest of his year can be. James Dunne and Luke Ondracek executed really strong races coming off of Cross Country training. I'm very confident that both can run much faster once they do a little bit more track specific work. Overall I was pleased with the weekend and I think we are going to have a great indoor season as a team."
