Turners Leads Hoyas Past LIU 9-6

Box Score

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University softball team earned its first win of the season, defeating LIU 9-6 in the final game of the FGCU Kickoff Classic in Fort Myers, Florida on Sunday. With its first tournament of the season in the books, GU holds a record of 1-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Hoyas opened the game on fire. GU earned its first run of the game in the first inning when Camryn Wincher's single up the middle brought Claire Turner home from second.

  • Two batters later, Kayla Dunn's single into center field brough Wincher home from second base, giving the Hoyas an early 2-0 lead after the top of the first inning.

  • With bases loaded and only one out in the second inning, Turner tripled, bringing three GU runners home to give Georgetown a 5-0 early lead.

  • Wincher was able to bring Turner home at the very next at bat, increasing Georgetown's lead to 6-0.

  • LIU earned four runs in the bottom of the third to make it a 6-4 ballgame.

  • Turner's double in the fourth inning brought Gabby Park home, extending the Hoya lead to three.

  • LIU brought a runner home to cut the GU lead back to two.

  • Georgetown recorded two more runs in the top of the sixth. Emily Strittmatter scored off a wild pitch. Then, Turner notched her fifth RBI of the day, this time bringing Park home off a single. The Hoyas maintained a 9-5 lead.

  • LIU would earn one more run in the bottom of the sixth, but it would not be enough as the Hoyas win 9-6.
