Hoyas Close Home Slate with Providence

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team will host the Providence College Friars on Tuesday, March 5 for a BIG EAST Conference matchup to close the home slate of the 2023-24 season. The game, presented by Invesco QQQ, is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tipoff at Capital One Arena and will be broadcast on FS1. The Hoyas enter Tuesday's contest with a 9-20 overall record and a 2-16 mark in BIG EAST play after falling in a heartbreaker to Xavier 98-93 at home on Saturday night. Providence sits at 18-11 on the year with a 9-9 mark in league play.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • On Saturday night, Georgetown fell to the visiting Xavier University Musketeers 98-93 at Capital One Arena. Rowan Brumbaugh led a quintet of Hoyas in double figures with a career-high 24 points, followed by Jayden Epps (20), Supreme Cook (15), Jay Heath (14) and Dontrez Styles (12). Cook tallied his eighth double-double of the season with a squad-best 14 rebounds and Epps' seven helpers paced the offense.
  • Epps is currently fourth in the BIG EAST in scoring, averaging 18.0 ppg in 26 outings. He leads a trio of Hoyas in double figures while Styles pitches in 13.1 ppg and Cook adds 11.1 ppg.
  • Cook's 8.3 rpg ranks third in the BIG EAST Conference and is fueled by his league-leading 4.1 offensive boards per game, which ranks fourth in the country. Additionally, the East Orange native leads the squad in efficiency, knocking down 58.6% (119-203) of his shots. He has tallied eight double-doubles on the season, with the most recent coming against Xavier (15P/14R) on March 2.
  • Epps dishes out 4.4 apg, holding on to eighth in the conference, while his 2.2 3-pointers made per game also ranks eighth in the league.
  • The Hoyas are led by Ed Cooley who is in his 18th season as a collegiate head coach and his first season with Georgetown. In 2022, Cooley was the recipient of the Naismith Coach of the Year Award, named the Sporting News Coach of the Year, the BIG EAST Coach of the Year, the NABC District 5 Coach of the Year and the USBWA District 1 Coach of the Year.
 
ABOUT THE FRIARS
  • Providence is coming off a 71-60 setback at Amica Mutual Pavilion to Villanova on Saturday. Josh Oduro led a trio of Friars in double digits with a game-best 16 points, followed by Devin Carter's 13 and Ticket Gaines' 11. Oduro and Carter each grabbed nine rebounds apiece while Rich Barron and Jayden Pierre paced the offense with a trio of assists each.
  • Carter leads the Friars and ranks second in the BIG EAST averaging 19.1 ppg. He leads a trio of Friars in double-digit scoring followed by Josh Oduro's 16.3 ppg and Bryce Hopkins' 15.5. Hopkins was sidelined with a season-ending injury earlier this year.
  • Carter grabs 8.3 rpg, ranking fourth in the BIG EAST Conference and bolstered by his 7.2 defensive boards per game that rank second in the league. Oduro chips in 7.1 rpg on the glass.
  • Carter (3.6 apg) and Pierre (3.1 apg) pace the offense as the duo rank 12th and 13th, respectively, in the BE in assists per game.
  • Carter is a threat on both ends as his 1.6 steals per game is tied for fifth in the BIG EAST while his 2.6 3-pointers made per game rank fourth in the league. Oduro registers 1.4 blocks per game, good enough for fifth in the conference.
  • The Friars are led by Head Coach Kim English, in his first season at Providence. He spent the previous two seasons as the head coach at George Mason before taking over at PC.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES WITH PROVIDENCE
  • Tuesday's game will be 83rd all-time between the two programs, dating back to a 1956 contest. The Hoyas hold the 47-35 advantage but have lost the previous five outings including an 84-76 matchup earlier this season at the AMP that saw Epps tally 26 while Ismael Massoud registered 16 points off the bench and Supreme Cook added 15.
  • The last win at home against the Friars was a 73-72 win at McDonough Arena on January 30, 2021. Jamorko PIckett and Jahvon Blair each tallied their 1,000th collegiate point in the game and Chudier Bile led all Hoyas with 19 points off the bench while Pickett and Donald Carey chipped in 12 and 10, respectively.
  • The last win at Capital One Arena was a 96-90 game that took two overtimes to complete. Jessie Govan poured in a career-high 33 points with 19 in the second half alone. The Hoyas knocked down 3-pointers at the end of regulation and the first overtime to extend the game both times.
  • In his first season as the head coach at Fairfield, Cooley faced Providence, falling 67-50. Paired with the game earlier this season in Rhode Island, Cooley is 0-2 against the Friars. Tuesday's matchup will be the second meeting between Cooley and PC Coach English with English holding the slight 1-0 advantage.
