WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's track & field team had a trio of student-athletes in competition in Eugene, Oregon for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, an event that lasts through June 30, on Thursday evening. From the trio, one student-athlete advanced to the next round of their respective events at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• In the men's 800-meter first round, All-American Tinoda Matsatsa competed in the final of a four-heat first round. The freshman led almost wire to wire, taking over the lead midway through the first lap. Matsatsa would run from the front for the rest of the race, clocking 1:46.73 to take first in the fourth heat and seventh overall to automatically qualify for Friday's semifinal.
• Competing in the third heat of the same event, All-American Tim McInerney ran in what would be a slower heat. With less than 2.5 seconds separating the first-place runner from the last-place runner in this heat, McInerney was working on staying among the top six for an automatic qualifier to Friday's semifinal. Settling into sixth place after one lap, McInerney slipped back as runners started to make their move at the bell. He finished with a time of 1:48.84 to take eighth in the heat, failing to advance.
• In the women's 1,500-meter first round, All-American Melissa Riggins competed in the third of a three-heat round. It was the fastest of all three heats. With the increased pace, Riggins worked to stick with the pack through 800 meters. As the field pushed again, Riggins was unable to hold on and timed in at 4:15.20 to finish 13th in the heat. All three time qualifiers came from Riggins' heat and her time was faster than all of the automatic qualifiers from the first heat.
