Matsatsa Finishes Ninth in 800m Finals at U.S. Olympic Team Trials

WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's Tinoda Matsatsa toed the line with the nation's best in Eugene, Oregon at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials and finished ninth in the men's 800m finals. He was one of just two collegiate runners in the finals field at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.

ON THE RECORD
"I couldn't be more proud of Tinoda's effort out here. Today he ran like a guy trying to make the team. He was probably a little too aggressive but seeing a 19-year-old run with that confidence was so cool. This is the highest level of the sport domestically and seeing the representation that Georgetown has had here has been amazing. I know lining up here has meant a lot to everyone on the team." - Assistant Track & Field / Head Men's Cross Country Coach Brandon Bonsey

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the finals of the men's 800-meter run, Matsatsa lined up in lane three against seven professionals and NCAA champion Shane Cohen of UVA. In the opening 400 meters, Matsatsa split 51.53 and was in fifth place at the bell. The freshman went a little early and while others kicked in the final 400 meters, he was unable to hold on to his spot, clocking 1:45.70 to finish ninth.
