Hoyas Defeat UConn Moving to 3-0 in BIG EAST Play

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's soccer team defeated the Connecticut Huskies 3-1 on Sunday afternoon in BIG EAST action. With the win, GU improves to 7-1-3 and 3-0 in conference play while UConn slides to 6-2-3 and 0-1-2 in conference action.

Head Coach Dave Nolan
"I was very impressed with the girls' performance today. UConn is a very dangerous team, and in Okafor, they have one of the most talented forwards in the country. Although she did get away for one, I thought we handled her very well.

We got a quick start in the game and scored two great early goals, but as to be expected, they had moments of real pressure that we had to handle. Going in at the half a goal ahead was something I reminded the girls we would have been happy with before the game. We knew we would face some more pressure in the second half but if we got the third goal, we felt that would deflate them and that's what transpired.

We now have to get ready for a Thursday road matchup against Butler who is an extremely well coached team with some very talented players."

About the Match
  • GU came out of the gates pressing the Huskies. Lizzie Heller was on the ball to the left of UConn's 18-yard box when she hit a ball to the back post that curled over the Connecticut goalkeeper into the back of the net giving Georgetown an early 1-0 lead.
  • A mere five minutes later, Natalie Means was flying down the right wing with runners heading into the box. Means found Henley Tippins near the penalty spot who laid the ball off to Maja Lardner for a point-blank opportunity. The Hoyas' leading goal scorer left no doubt smashing it into the bottom left corner giving GU a 2-0 advantage 12 minutes into the contest.
  • In a very eventful first 16 minutes of action, UConn was able to cut the Hoya lead to one on a counter attack goal.
  • GU took the 2-1 advantage into the break as the Hoyas were outshot by the Huskies 6-4 in the first half.
  • In the 65th minute, Means ran onto a ball played from beyond midfield by Heller and the junior did the rest. Means took two touches blowing by the Huskie defender before slotting it home giving GU a 3-1 advantage.
  • GU was able to fend off the Husky comeback efforts securing a 3-1 victory on the road.

Notable Stats
  • Heller scored her first collegiate goal in the first half and added an assist on Means' second half goal.
  • Lardner tallied her team-leading sixth goal of the season in the first half.
  • Means recorded her second goal of the season and her fourth assist.
  • Cara Martin and Anna Karpenko combined for the win in goal.
  • Tippins tallied an assist.
