Georgetown Hosts Butler in Friday Night Contest

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team will host the Butler University Bulldogs on Friday, January 31 at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on FS1 with Noah Reed calling the play-by-play and Phil Martelli providing analysis. Georgetown enters Friday's contest with a 13-8 record and a 4-6 mark in league action following a 66-41 loss against No. 15 St. John's on Tuesday.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • On Tuesday evening, the Hoyas fell to No. 15/14 St. John's 66-41 at Capital One Arena. Malik Mack was the lone Hoya in double figures, tallying 13 points on 4-for-9 shooting. He also grabbed five rebounds to go along with a team-best three helpers. Sorber followed closely with eight points while leading GU on the glass with nine rebounds. Sorber added a season-best four steals to his line.
  • Sorber leads a quartet of Hoyas averaging double figures posting 14.5 ppg, a mark that is tied for 14th in the BIG EAST. Peavy chips in 14.1 ppg, followed by Malik Mack (13.0 ppg) and Jayden Epps (12.3 ppg). Georgetown, Marquette and Villanova are the only institutions with four players among the top 30 in scoring in the league.
  • Sorber leads the squad on the glass managing 9.1 rpg, which leads the league, followed by Fielder (5.6 rpg) and Peavy (5.2 rpg).
  • Mack paces the offense dishing out 4.5 apg, which ranks eighth in the league.
  • Peavy is tied for 22nd in the country and ranks second in the BIG EAST in steals per game, picking 2.29 pockets per game.
  • Sorber has seven double-doubles to his name, ranking first in the league. The seven double-doubles rank first nationally among freshmen, outpacing Cooper Flagg (Duke), Ace Bailey (Rutgers), Jayden Quaintance (Arizona State), Donnie Freeman (Syracuse), Derik Queen (Maryland) and Elijah Price (Fresno State) who each have six.
  • Defensively, the team leads the league in scoring defense, allowing an average of 65.1 ppg. GU ranks second in the BIG EAST and 21st in the nation in field goal percentage defense (39.5%). The Hoyas are third in the league in steals per game (8.1) and are forcing opponents to commit 13.90 turnovers per game, which ranks third in the conference.
  • On Monday, Sorber was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the fifth time this season after averaging 20.0 ppg, 13.0 rpg and 3.0 apg in a pair of games while Peavy was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll. Peavy averaged 25.5 ppg on 60.0% (21-35) shooting, and grabbed 3.0 rpg over the week while dishing out 1.5 apg and picking 1.5 pockets per game.
 
ABOUT THE BULLDOGS
  • In its most recent outing, Butler (9-12, 2-8 BE) fell to No.9 Marquette 78-69 on Tuesday evening at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Jahmyl Telfort led a duo of Bulldogs in double figures with 24 points followed by Patrick McCaffery (12). Andre Screen led the Bulldogs on the glass pulling down nine boards followed by Pierre Brooks II who had eight to his credit. Telfort paced the offense with five assists in the contest.
  • Butler shot 40.7% (24-59) from the field, while shooting 27.3% (6-22) from behind the arc.
  • Telfort leads a trio of Bulldogs averaging double figures posting 16.2 ppg, followed by Brooks (14.9 ppg) and McCaffery (12.2 ppg).
  • Screen leads Butler on the glass grabbing 6.0 rpg, followed by Brooks (5.3 rpg)
  • Telfort paces the offense, dishing out 3.4 apg, followed by Finley Bizjack (2.1 apg).
  • Butler is led by Thad Matta, who is in the third season of his second stint back with the Bulldogs. Matta was the Butler head coach previously for one year in 2000.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES WITH BUTLER
  • Friday's matchup will be the 25th all-time meeting between the two institutions dating back to the 2009-10 season. Butler leads 13-11 in the all-time series. The Blue & Gray's last victory over the Bulldogs was on February 19, 2023 when GU defeated Butler 68-62 at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
  • Head Coach Ed Cooley is 18-7 against Butler in his career and is 2-3 all-time against Thad Matta.
