Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 15 Hoyas Blank St. John’s, 4-0

WASHINGTON - The No. 15 Georgetown University women's soccer team used a dominant performance to down the St. John's University Red Storm 4-0 on Saturday evening in Queens, New York at Belson Stadium. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 9-2-2 on the season and 5-0-0 in league play, while the Red Storm drop to 2-6-4 for the year and 0-3-2 in the conference.

Head Coach Dave Nolan
  • "Tonight was another good performance by the team at a venue where we have struggled in the past. We started very brightly and put St. Johns under some heavy pressure early on. That pressure paid off as we drew a penalty kick which Henley Tippins finished to take the lead. We continued to keep the pressure on and drew a second kick which Shay Montgomery tucked away also in an excellent first half. The second half, they came back into it which we expected, but we created some very good chances and added two more with goals from Maja Lardner and Henley Tippins. The most rewarding part of the evening was the opportunity to get some minutes and experience for our younger players and some who we haven't been able to get on the field much. We get a week now to rest up, recover and prepare for our senior day against DePaul next Saturday night at Shaw Field."
How it Happened
  • Georgetown was dominant early in the contest as the Hoyas spent the first 10 minutes on the attack and forcing the Red Storm defense to make plays.
  • In the 12th minute, physical play in the box resulted in a penalty kick being awarded to the Hoyas. Henley Tippins stepped up, and buried it to make it 1-0.
  • The Blue & Gray continued to hold possession, and a trip in the box in the 31st minute gave GU another penalty kick which was scored by Natalie Means.
  • After some dangerous moments, the Hoyas went into the break with the 2-0 lead and the 19-0 advantage in shots.
  • The first goal in the run of play came in the 53rd minute when Means took it to the corner and sent in a low cross which found the foot of Maja Lardner to make it 3-0.
  • In the 65th minute, Lizzie Heller sent it to Lardner at the top of the box. She passed in a low ball and Tippins was able to redirect it in as GU took the 4-0 lead which would stand as the final.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot SJU 27-3, and the Hoyas had 12 on goal to the Red Storm's two.
  • The Hoyas were awarded five corners to St. John's two in the contest.
  • Cara Martin and Cameron Gabrielson combined for the shutout and the win as Gabrielson had two saves in the contest.
