WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's track & field program wrapped up day two of competition on Saturday, March 1, at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships, presented by Jeep in Chicago, Illinois.
The Georgetown women's team earned 112 points, securing second place, trailing UConn with 189 points and surpassing St. John's with 93. The men placed fourth with 77 team points.
Tinoda Matsatsa was honored as the Most Outstanding Track Performer after clinching gold in both the 800m and the 4x400 relay. His 800m time of 1:46.10 set a new BIG EAST Indoor Championship record, surpassing the previous mark of 1:46.20 set by Villanova's Sean Dolan in 2024.
Rebecca Ochan was recognized as both the Most Outstanding Track Performer and the High Point Performer of the Meet, accumulating 22.0 individual points. She claimed first place in the 200m with a time of 23.74 seconds and in the 400m with a time of 53.63 seconds.
Head Coach Alton McKenzie
"We had fantastic team performances from our men and women this entire weekend. The goal was to compete and fight for every point and we certainly did that over the last 2 days. Our men didn't have a lot of depth across the board so we relied heavily on our Mid Distance/Distance Group to score significant points. It was impressive to see the dominant performances by Abel in the Mile & then on anchor in the 4x800 along with Tinoda's Big East Record in the 800m and returning to anchor our 4x4 to victory. Both look poised for big performances in two weeks at the NCAA Championships. On the women's side we put together a true team effort to secure the runner-up trophy; it has been a long time since we've finished this high as a team at the Big East Indoor Championships. Melissa Riggins looked very impressive in winning the 800 and anchoring our winning 4x800m Team. Rebecca Ochan's performance in winning the 200 & 400 and being a part of the 4x4 team that finished 2nd earned her a well deserved Track Performer of the Meet Award. Her journey has been very inspirational and she's a testament to what resilience and determination looks like. Those wins were her 1st podium finishes individually at the Conference Meet. Proud to see her hard work & patience rewarded. Was a great day to be a Hoya. Extremely happy with the effort put forth by both teams this weekend. Excited to bring a small but very strong group to Virginia Beach in two weeks to compete at the NCAA Championships."
Assistant Coach Brandon Bonsey
"The indoor season is so time obsessed so getting to a post season meet that is about competing is always refreshing. The men finished at least top three individually from the 800-5000 and won the 4x400 and 4x800 while finishing second in the DMR. I think we clearly showed we are the best middle distance program in the BIG EAST. We are excited for the NCAA meet in two weeks"
Assistant Coach Mitchell Baker
"We were excited to be in championship races and place an athlete into the top-3 from the 800-5000 with 8 of 10 individual entries scoring. Our team-first focus was really solid; taking a 4x8 win at the end to help secure 2nd overall as a team was hugely gratifying for the whole event group. It was a great day to be a Hoya, and we're excited to be bringing a large contingent to NCAAs in two weeks."
