Seventh-Seeded Hoyas Face 10th-Seeded DePaul in BIG EAST Tournament First Round

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team will travel to New York to face the 10th-seeded DePaul Blue Demons in the first round of the 2025 BIG EAST Tournament Presented by Jeep. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Madison Square Garden. The seventh-seeded Hoyas are coming off of an 83-77 loss at DePaul on Saturday afternoon to close the regular season at 17-14 overall with an 8-12 mark in BIG EAST play.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • Georgetown is coming off an 83-77 loss to DePaul at Wintrust Arena on Saturday in the regular season finale. Micah Peavy led a pair of Hoyas in double figures with 29 points on 11-for-19 shooting, including four made 3-pointers. Peavy added a squad-best 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Jayden Epps followed up with 17 points to round out those in double figures as the Hoyas shot 42.0% (29-69) from the field.
  • For his efforts in the 1-1 week that included a 75-73 win over Villanova to complete the season sweep, Peavy was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Sunday morning. He averaged 24.0 ppg on 56.3% (18-32), including 60.0% (9-15) from downtown, to go along with 7.5 rpg and 3.0 apg.
  • Later on Sunday, Peavy was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team following a season that saw him average 16.9 ppg, good enough for sixth in the conference, while recording a league-leading 2.3 spg. He chipped in 5.7 rpg and 3.6 apg while he appeared in and started all 31 games of the season, a feat achieved by no other Hoya.
  • Additionally, Thomas Sorber earned a nod to the All-BIG EAST Third Team following a season where he averaged 14.5 ppg, 8.5 rpg and 2.0 bpg in a season shortened because of injury. Sorber was also one of two unanimous selections to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team. He and fellow frosh Liam McNeeley (UConn) were the only freshman to earn third team honors and unanimous selections to the all-freshman squad.
  • Sorber's season was cut short following an injury suffered to his left foot on Saturday, February 15. He had surgery on Wednesday, February 26 and a full recovery is expected. Sorber will not play for the remainder of the 2024-25 season.
  • Peavy leads a quartet of Hoyas averaging double figures posting 16.9 ppg, a mark that is sixth in the BIG EAST. Sorber chips in 14.5 ppg, followed by Epps (12.8 ppg) and Malik Mack (12.3 ppg).
  • Sorber leads the squad on the glass pulling down 8.5 rpg, which ranks second in the league, followed by Peavy (5.7 rpg) and Drew Fielder (5.2 rpg).
  • Malik Mack Paces the offense dishing out 4.45 apg, a mark that ranks sixth in the BE.
  • Peavy is tied for 15th in the country and leads the BIG EAST in steals per game, picking 2.32 pockets per game.
  • Sorber's eight double-doubles are tied for fourth in the league and are third in the nation among freshmen, behind Derik Queen (Maryland) with 12.
  • Defensively, the team is fifth in the league in scoring defense, allowing an average of 68.74 ppg. GU ranks fourth in the BIG EAST in field goal percentage defense (42.4%). The Hoyas are fifth in the league in steals per game (7.9) and are forcing opponents to commit 13.32 turnovers per game, which ranks fourth in the conference.
 
ABOUT THE BLUE DEMONS
  • In the regular season finale, DePaul (13-18, 4-16 BE) held on for the 83-77 win at Wintrust Arena. Isaiah Rivera's 21 points led a quintet of Blue Demons in double figures with CJ Gunn (17), Layden Blocker (16), JJ Traynor (12) and Troy D'Amico (10) rounding out those in double figures. DePaul was outrebounded by the Hoyas 33-29 with Rivera's nine boards leading the way for Blue Demons. Rivera's six assists paced the offense as DPU shot 56.6% (30-53) from the field.
  • Gunn's 12.8 ppg leads the squad while Rivera chips in 10.7 ppg as the other Blue Demon in double figures.
  • NJ Benson pulls down 6.1 rpg but has only appeared in 25 games for the Blue Demons. He is followed by David Skogman (5.1 rpg) and Gunn (4.0 rpg).
  • Conor Enright paces the offense, dishing out 6.2 assists per game, but has not played since early February. Blocker has picked up the slack in his absence tallying 3.1 apg.
  • DePaul is led by Head Coach Chris Holtmann in his first season.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES WITH DEPAUL
  • Wednesday's matchup will be the third meeting this season and the 53rd all-time meeting between the two sides dating back to the 1941-42 season. Georgetown leads the all-time series 36-16.
  • DePaul has won both matchups this year, first a 73-68 victory at Capital One Arena on January 17 and most recently an 83-77 win at Wintrust Arena to close the regular season on March 8.
  • Head Coach Ed Cooley is 19-8 against DePaul in his career and is 5-4 all-time against Chris Holtmann.
 
HOYAS X THE BIG EAST TOURNAMENT
  • Georgetown enters the BIG EAST Tournament as the #7 seed. It is just the third time in program history the Hoyas have been seeded seventh (2014, 2005).
  • The Hoyas have a record of 1-2 as the seventh seed.
  • Georgetown is 1-1 against DePaul in the BIG EAST Tournament with a 70-53 win in the first round in 2016 and a 60-56 loss in the first round in 2014.
  • In the last matchup between the two teams in the BIG EAST Tournament, D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera led a trio of Hoyas in double figures tallying 20 points, followed by LJ Peak (10) and Bradley Hayes (10). Hayes pulled down seven boards to lead the Blue & Gray on the glass while Peak and Isaac Copeland paced the offense, dishing out a trio of assists each.
  • Georgetown is 3-2 against the #10 seed in BE Tournament history. The last time the Hoyas faced #10 was the 2015 tournament when second-seeded GU defeated 10th-seeded Creighton 60-55 in the quarterfinals.
  • The Blue & Gray is 10-9 in the BIG EAST Tournament First Round, but have lost its last three appearances in the first round. The last time GU won the first round was the 2021 tournament when the eighth-seeded Hoyas defeated #9 Marquette 68-49.
